Restore a C1 Eaton gas cap

Does anyone know a restorer who rebuilds C1 gas caps? Specifically a 1958-62 Eaton gas cap? I could replate it fine, but not sure how I'd replace the paper gasket... and the gasket will not survive replating I imagine. I could maybe glue a paper gasket in there? riveting would be tough, as the head of the rivet is square. The company that reproduces the 57-58 eaton gas cap says they could give it a try, but for $125 - but he's not sure he could do it, and wants me to replate it myself -- which means I need to remove the rivet, ruining the cap potentially.

I could buy an NOS cap for $170 on ebay, so I'm hesitant to spend that kind of money for an unproven vendor.

Thanks. I didn't realize he did stuff aside from electrical components. I have a regulator and generator by their shop already

I actually corresponded with them and he offered to restore my gas cap for $100-125, but wasn't sure if he could do it. So I'm shopping around for people with a track record...

So is there a way for a do-it-yourselfer to restore the early C-1 gas caps? Specifically, pursuant to the original question, is there a way to replace the gasket? I was wondering it if would be possible to cut out the old gasket, clean and replate the cap, and then fold and bend a new gasket in such a manner as to "stretch" it over the inner ears of the gas cap?

I was told that if you soak the paper gasket in water , it will slip over the tangs. Be patient it works.

Jerry is right. Two things to remember; use the correct gasket material and work slowly(be patient).
