'62 Exhaust 250 hp exhaust manifold studs

On my '62, the studs on the exhaust manifold are loose in the threads. I can't seem to keep the manifold to the exhaust pipe tight, to keep the gasket doughnut from leaking. This is an original exhaust manifold on the orginal engine to the car. So I would prefer to save the manifold. Is there a fix for this problem?

You can buy new studs. See the usual Corvette parts vendors. Consider stainless steel ones. If the stud is loose in the manifold, I suppose the threads can be fixed with a heli-coil.

Are you sure it's the studs? On mine, the nuts seem loosen over time. Or, they need tightening. I wonder if the nuts loosen, or the doughnut shrinks, which make the nuts seem loose.

You've got a problem opposite of what most folks have. Usually, trying to get the studs out is near impossible.

If the studs are actually loose in the threads, then the threads in the manifold or the studs themselves must be worn. The fix is to heli-coil the stud tappings in the manifold and install new studs. ALWAYS use stainless steel studs----originality be damned on this one.

Also, instead of using the "soft" donut packings, use the sintered iron versions. These will eliminate compression of the packing over time. The 2" sintered iron packing is GM #3731062.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, the studs are loose but it is the manifold that is causing them to be loose. I had replaced the studs about 5 yrs. ago when we went through the engine as the studs on the exhaust pipe side were just plain all but corroded away. Sounds like helicoils are the way to go. At least these steel studs are easy to remove now. Thanks again.

I also use brass nuts instead of the Stover Nuts that are suppose to be original.
