    86 C4 OEM mufflers

I had a dream last night that someone out there has a pair of 1986 C4 OEM SS mufflers sitting in their garage that were removed after a little use replaced by aftermarket ones.
Kidding aside, would sure like to find a pair of used originals if they exist out there.
    Anybody have a lead?
    Thanks.

Norm, I like to look on craigslist for vintage parts in my local areas.

Do you know if any other years are the same? 84?

I had the same dream but in mine the pipes and mufflers came off a 1989 convertible!

The 1986 Corvette mufflers were unique to that year.

Years ago when I would attend Corvette shows like Bloomington and Carlisle I'd see the big-time aftermarket muffler manufacturers with big booths and adjacent bank of 4 post lifts. Guys would drive their Corvettes, mostly C4's at the time, right in and the installers would strip off the exhaust system, install their "super-dooper" (i.e. crude and loud) aftermarket system and throw the old systems into a pile. By the end of each day the piles were ENORMOUS. Later, I saw the same thing happen with C5's and C6's. Most of the cars I saw getting the new systems, be they C4, C5, or C6, were practically new at the time. I told other people, some day someone is going to wish they had those systems stacked in the pile. I don't know what the vendors did with them but, based on the way they handled them, I strongly suspect they were headed for the scrap yard.

The 1989 Corvette mufflers were also unique to that year. There were 2 sets used-----one for ALL convertibles as well as coupes with automatic transmission (2.59:1 rear gear)and the other for coupes with manual transmission or automatic with performance axle ratio (3.07:1 rear gear).

            Norm,

I have a 90 with manual transmission and was able to get a set of take off mufflers from an 1989 with approx 7k miles. I kept looking and they showed up on Ebay. They were date coded 1989, however my car is an early 90 built in Nov 89 so I didn't loose any points when judged at the nationals. Joe Lucia said the 89 was uniqe to that year, but nothing was mentioned in judging. So your dream could come true. Just keep looking.

              Re: 86 C4 OEM mufflers

I see whole piles of mufflers and exhaust systems at places where vendors install cat back systems = Bloomington Gold, Funfest, and just last weekend at the National Corvette Museum C5/C6 Bash. Now days most of these systems are C6 with some c5s, so the chanches of a C4 are still slim. When I wanted a replacement for my C6 I asked at one of these events and was told to take it so they didn't have to put it int he dumptster. YMMV, but it is another possible source.

Parts wanted in The Driveline might be another option.

The 1989 muffler part numbers were different than the 1990 muffler part numbers.
