    2014 Corvette Pricing Released Today

    From today's Automotive News

DETROIT -- General Motors has set the base price of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe at $51,995, including destination charges, $1,400 more than the outgoing model.
The base convertible will be $56,995 with destination, $1,240 more than its predecessor, GM said today.
The pricing makes good on GM's promise to keep the sports car's base price attainable despite many improvements in the redesigned seventh-generation Corvette, which is expected to go on sale in September.
Standard features will include a seven-speed manual transmission; dual, 8-inch infotainment screens with Chevy MyLink infotainment system and rearview camera; Bose nine-speaker sound system with Bluetooth connection; and a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel.
All models will get GM's new 6.2-liter V-8 engine with cylinder deactivation, which shuts off four of the eight cylinders at cruising speeds to save fuel. GM has said the new Stingray will get around 30 mpg on the highway, vs. 26 mpg for the current Corvette.
GM executives want to increase Corvette sales and attract younger buyers. The car's improved interior and sleeker design, with break-from-tradition styling cues such as the trapezoidal taillights, are aimed at broadening its appeal.
GM set the price with the goal of delivering "more than expected for our customers," Chris Perry, vice president of Chevy marketing, said in a statement.
"The Corvette Stingray delivers a combination of performance, design and technology that very few manufacturers can match, and none can even come close for $52,000," Perry said.
The sticker price for the mid-level trim, the 2LT, is $56,205. The top trim, the 3LT, is priced at $60,000 and includes a color head-up display, navigation, heated and ventilated seats, premium leather seats and a leather-wrapped dash and instrument panel.
Major options include competition sports seats ($2,495); exposed carbon fiber ($1,995); magnetic-based damping system ($1,795) and a dual-mode exhaust system ($1,195)
GM said the model shown for the car's unveiling at the Detroit auto show in January -- a 3LT with the Z51 performance package and other options -- would be priced at $73,360. The Z51 package includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear tires; a transmission-cooling system and magnetic damping.
Last year, GM sold 14,132 Corvettes, up 7 percent from a year earlier. That volume is less than half of the 28,000-to-36,000-unit range that Chevy hit during most of the last 15 years.
While the Corvette sells in relatively low volumes, Chevy executives hope that the Stingray launch will generate showroom traffic during a busy year for the brand.
Chevy rolled out its redesigned Impala sedan this month. The next-generation Chevy Silverado, the first redesign of the pickup in seven years, is expected to hit showrooms in May or June. The rear-wheel-drive SS sedan is slated for a fourth quarter launch, to be followed early next year by rollouts of the redesigned Chevy Suburban and Tahoe.

"Broadening market appeal" with Camaro tail lights and Oragami styling, huh? Yuppies will love "dual infotainment screens" and fancy stereo .As for me, I like my uncomplicated analog gages on the classic C1 and C2 dashs, and like another poster said some time ago,"who cares if the radio works, I listen to the side pipes."

I don't know to whom, everyone who I know who has the means to buy one (Corvette and non Corvette guys) find it tacky and overwrought, me included.

I own C-1's and C-2's and I have owned a C-6 Z06. Get over it. Most of us like a world class car with comfort and performance. If you want to ride around in a 50 year old car, more power to you but don't call me a Yuppie. Ride a C-7 then critique the car.Its the best GM has made since 1953.

I have to agree...The car left without an update would not have survived the accounts hatchet at GM. Twelve thousand units a year wasn't going to cut it if we don’t want the our car to become extinct, something needed to be done to breathe new life. As far as a high performance model, you have the Z51 option. The only generations to offer optional power plants the first year was C2 & C3, they will come in time for the C7.

And if you had the opportunity to be at the regional meet in BG last weekend, there might have been a leak as to when and how much HP will be introduced...

They better. Excluding 1997 which was a short-run model year, the last time annual sales were lower than 2012 was 1961.

                          Michael------

The horsepower wars have already gotten to the absurd. As I've said many times before, there's no way one can actually use more than about 300 HP in a Corvette on the street in any manner that's sane, responsible, safe and legal. I absolutely don't promote any street operation of a Corvette that's not sane, responsible, safe, and legal. In fact, I think operation contrary to that gives Corvette guys a bad name.

By the way, I saw a "roadside memorial" set up the other day on Niles Canyon Road at the site of a head-on crash between a Dodge Viper and a pick-up truck several weeks ago. We don't know what actually caused the crash, but we do know that the Viper for "unknown reasons" crossed the center line. The driver won't be doing it again.

Interesting point, Joe. In 2012, almost 15 million cars were sold here. I don't have the amount of cars sold in 1961 available to me today (I may be able to get it when I go to the office tomorrow), but suffice to say, there was only a small fraction of total cars sold that year. I make this point to help ensure we consider the population and proportion of Corvettes sold 52 years ago vs today. This may make your point even stronger, may make is weaker.

As for the new car, I am seeing them on the street now. I live approximately 5 miles from the GM Proving Grounds, so I see them on my commute. I gotta say, they look spectacular on the street. It's easy to see the lineage to the current model when one's approaching. I'm over the rear end's look. As has been said here, something needs to change to keep the badge alive. GM has a target demographic. Some of us aint it. I can only imagine how "awful" it must have been when GM put one of those new-fangled, rookie "V8" things and God forbid, a manual gear box in them, trying to increase sales. How'd that work out?

Jaime, Thou protest to much. I like the C6, think it's the best since C2; still don't like and don't HAVE to like the C7.
