    1972 Original Paint

I just purchased a 28,000 mile Ontario Orange 72 coupe with original paint. It looks very nice for a 41 year car when it is outside but not quite as good under the flourescant lights in my garage. The paint has some minor checking and feels a little rough. Assuming it is indeed original, is there any particular product that would help the old lacquer paint shine a bit more? I don't want to get too aggressive as I realize the old lacquer finish is pretty fragile.
Or maybe I should just change the lights in my garage!
    Thanks

Try a claybar. is the VIN deriv. 6574? If yes, that was my car.

Congrats on the new family member , Wow only 28,000 miles in all those years!
As Harry mentioned above a good clay bar session would be the first step in a paint correction process (after a good washing) claybar will remove any old wax and most contaminents, use plenty of soapy water when doing the clay bar. After that a good sealant or wax of your choice should yield good results, if, after that, you still feel the shine isn't up to snuff you can always go to a professional detailer who will use a machine to get the paint looking real good. Remember if its still the original paint, it's never going to be as shiny as modern day base coat, clear coat paints
Ontario Orange was one of 3 firemist colors, the other 2 being Steel cities gray and War bonnet yellow that you got in 1972.
Would love to see some pictures, when you can.

Concur...clay bar followed by wax/cleaner followed by pure carnuba wax. I use Mother's products.

Be cautious, as if it is the original lacquer, anytime you rub anything on it it will move and separate the properties of the lacquer paint. Just my 2 cents, DO NOT TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL DETAILER. As that may be fine an everyday car or a base coat clear coat, they usually get too agressive and could cause either damage or ruin what is left of the original factory paint. Once it is gone, it isn't coming back.

Ironically, the article you cite says to use a clay bar before using Meguiar's #7.
Perhaps you should read the article again?

Otherwise I do find it an interesting article.
