Dash Wiring Harness Routing Assistance Needed!

I've routed a new main dash harness across the bottom of the tach/speedometer instrument panel as per AIM. Except for the top dash pad, none of the rest of the panels or console are installed. The main harness splits just beyond the wiring clip at the bottom right edge of the panel with sub-harnesses branching off for the center instrument cluster, wiper switch and console heater/AC controls. Additionally, the vacuum lines for the heater/AC and the power window harness all converge at the same point. The problem encountered is the left duct of the center duct box doesn't allow enough clearance between the bottom right of the left instrument panel to route all the wiring and vacuum lines. It appears the vacuum lines and control wire for the heater/AC should be installed between the firewall and the center duct box. What is the sequence of events for getting past the pinch point? Should the center duct box be installed before or after the harness is run? I could really use some pointers. Thanks...Clark

Share with us the year of your car, and if a 1970 share the month of production -- the dash wiring harness routing changed during 1970 production.

A hint when installing the dash harness: warm it either in the bright sunlight or under lamps. It is much more flexible when warmed -- that is the way the factory did it. Use caution not to over heat and damage the harness.

Thanks Terry...Will try using a hair drier with the precautions you recommended. The car is a '70 built in March...Clark

I will have to do some checking on whether the main harness runs low and the up and over the steering column or stay high the whole way. Did you have the original harness in place, or did you start from scratch?

My experience is the reproduction 70 wire harness's are really 71 and up style. Early 70 wire harnesses, run under the gages, above the steering column, and over to the center gage cluster. The wires run up to the tach and speedo. Around s/n 13,000 ?? they changed the routing over the top of the gages and the wires drop down to the gages. Then proceeds over to the center cluster, higher above them.
The reproduction wire harness's are designed to go over the gages, not like the original routing on the early 70's.
I encountered this when restoring s/n 13942 and have looked at several cars since.
Try routing the harness this way and see if it works better.
          My survey to date:

          2161, under
          6243, under
          6437, under
          11187, under
          12824, under
13942, over (car I had here)
          14036, over
          14645, over
          14803, over
          16717, over
          16965, over

Thanks Terry/ Gary...The body shop that painted the car removed the original wiring harnesses. I laid them out with the new harnesses but checked only the wiring color and fittings; not the length of the main harness. I called M&H Electrical that provided the harnesses to ZIP. They indicate a change was issued to the AIM on July 9, 1970 that moved the routing from the bottom of the panel to across the top of the tach/speedo assemblies. Ironically, they indicate the length of the early 1970 main dash harness is 5 inches longer from the fuse box to where the center and console sub harnesses split off than the 1971 that routes across the top. Not sure if the sub harnesses are longer. The longer main harness may allow running it across the top which would then have only the sub harnesses emerging from the right side of the left panel into the tight space between the center duct. Guess I'll try the top routing. Will appreciate your comments/recommendations. Thanks...Clark

I used Lectric Limited harness. I routed it across the top, like the 71's. I had to move some of the wire supports, but all the wires were long enough to hook up.
I think that 5" extra length on the early cars was needed to go up out of the fuse box, then down the speedo and underneath speedo and tach. Going across the top saves wire lengths and probably saved 5-cents per car back then. Try running it above, I am pretty sure everything will hook up and work ok.

Thanks Gary...Will make a run at the top routing in the next few days and let you know how it works out. Appreciate your help...Clark
