    68 sill plate underlayment ?

In my 68, when I started restoring it, there was really tattered underlayment under the sill plates, I tossed it, but have not seen reproduction (or good used, or NOS) underlayment for the door sills. The Assembly Manual seems to show this material also. Anyone have a suggestion of what to use or source for this?

    thanks,

    Steve

Steve. I believe I have the original carpet and sills on my car but never saw any underlayment for the sills.

If any was used in 1968, it sure wasn't used in 1969 (which use the same sill plates).

I never seen any under layment, but I do know there are orange plastic plugs that reside in the holes under the sills.

I just took off the sill plates on the 68 convert. And there is a black tar, rubber like layment under them.

I asked this same question years ago and got the same response that there was probably nothing under it. I suspect that at one time it was there as it is so obviously depicted in an origional GM copy of the AIM. It is also shown in the reproduction AIMs. This is one of those 68 only question marks. It would be nice to know what it was and when it was, or if it was even installed from the get go. If it was not used wouldn't it have been removed from the AIM?

the tattered material in my 68 was much like tar paper or the anti squeek matieral used for the gas tank, but the size and shpe of the door sill and overlapped in to the tub area. I think it must have been used at some point from the factory?

Thanks for the pictures. Does the front part of the pad and interior part under the carpet look like the one shown in the AIM.? I wonder if those cut outs would be for aligning the screws for the sill as they look pretty darn close. Just a sloppy installation which would be typical. I think you answered the what question, so then what is you car B-day?

I haven't checked the AIM yet Dale but here is the passenger side that should have been in the earlier thread.

                          Dale,
Your copy of the AIM shows a change #7 that should say "redrawn & ..." Can you read the text & date? My copy is not good enough to read the date, and does not have change #8. What is Change #8? I can not read that from your photo. I also have the page with the first six changes and it does not have a pad listed on it.

I would hastily conclude that initial production did not have the pad and later production did. At some point the pad was not installed and we will have to pin down all those dates if we are to be accurate. Is it possible to see the pad without disassembling the car? That is, could it become a judged item if we can pin down those beginning and ending dates? Of course if it is detectable without dis-assembly we are more likely to get a handle on those dates than if removal of the sill plate is necessary.

Hi Terry, there would be no way to see if the pad is there or not without removing the sill plates. My car's build date is Feb. 21 68, and seemed to have the pads, but the car was about 35 years old when I bought it from the original owner. I'm guessing he hadn't added the pads, so they were likly original (they were definately in bad shape).

Since the need for the pads isn't functional, or at least not obviously functional, my guess is that if someone had removed the sill plates and found them deteriorated they would be more likely to remove them than they would be to install them if they were not there. It would seem there is no reproduction available so one would have to fabricate something, and if there was nothing to start with one is not likely to make them out of thin air. End result -- if there are some form of pads there we can conclude there were pads to start with. If nothing is there and the car has been restored, or new carpets and/or sill plates installed, we just don't know whether there were pads there to start with or not.

All that is a waste of time though because only those who remove their sill plates will know.

Someone here needs to stat and keep a survey; but it will be a long process to come to a conclusion. If we can get some dates off the AIM(s) we can narrow our search, but it will still be a long haul.
