    1970 Clear Vinyl Floor Mats

In a previous thread (1967 Clear Floor Mats) both TerryMcManmon and Michael Hanson were discussing when clear versus black floor matswere available for purchase as a dealer accessory.
I have four different 1970 Custom Feature Accessory books,so I thought I would share what I found.
Custom Feature Accessories Camaro Corvette booklet (Litho inUSA), which simply states deluxe front rubber floor mats showing a picture ofblack mats and no reference to a part number and no reference of clear vinylfloor mats. (Reference page 15)
Chevrolet Custom Feature Accessories Data Catalog (Litho inUSA), which lists Corvette Front Contour Black part number 993922 and shows apicture of black mats. (Reference page 35)

Like Terry, I have the clear floor mats (which are nowyellowed) for my 1970. The back side is smooth and I believe there is a partnumber on each. The car is still in storage, so I am not able to look at themats at the moment. The original ownerpurchased those mats new in June when he picked up the car from the dealer. The1971 I use to own had the black rubber floor mats.

In my opinion it would appear that the Clear Vinyl FloorMats were available for 1970 using the 1969 part number.

I am not sure if this is for the clear ones or if I got black ones for the 1969. The date on this is 8/8/69 which predates the 1970. The interior on the 1969 was black, so black mats would not have been an issue for me. I do remember the 1970 bright blue interior demanding clear mats. I checked the 1970 Invoice and there is no mention of the floor mats.

A quick search failed to turn up the clear mats, but I know they are in the storage area someplace.

            Mike,
Ralph Spears sent me one photo of a black mat he has that I posted in the C2 thread on this subject. He may have other photos if you ping him. Here is the one I posted for him in the C2 thread:

              All------

When I took delivery my 1969 Corvette in September, 1969 one of the very first things I did was to obtain a set of floormats from the dealer's parts department. I received a set of CLEAR floor mats which, as far as I knew, was the only style available at the time. While I don't have a copy of that receipt, if the parts catalogs are correct (and I'm pretty sure they are), the part number was GM #987441. These mats were released in late 1967 for 1968 Corvettes. They also became the mats for 1969 Corvettes. GM #987441 was discontinued without supercession April, 1970.

Later, I grew weary of these clear vinyl mats. They were not real pliable to begin with and as they aged they became even less pliable. They always got caught on the accelerator pedal which was unnerving. I trimmed the driver side to no real avail.

Later, I purchased a set of BLACK floor mats, the only style available at that time. I don't recall exactly when I did this but it was probably not more than 2 or 3 years. I liked these better because they were more pliable and "laid flat". I still had problems with interference with the accelerator pedal and, consequently, trimmed the driver side mat. This was only marginally effective since the real problem was the mat "riding up" and the "barbs" on the bottom really did little to prevent this. Nevertheless, these mats are still in the car to this day, well worn on the driver side. They are pictured below. Keep in mind that the driver side mat has been trimmed in the area near the accelerator pedal.

Here's the scoop on the black mats: They were released for the 1970 model year. They were never cataloged for any earlier Corvette (although they obviously work perfectly for 68-69). The part number was GM #993922. Those were discontinued in November, 1972 and replaced by GM #994401. That was replaced by GM #996198 which was the discontinued without supercession in 1983.

For 63-67 guys, the floor mats were always GM #985822. These were CLEAR vinyl floor mats. They were discontinued without supercession in January, 1968. The later mats may work but they were never cataloged for any C2 application.

              So, here's the summary:

              1963-67---------CLEAR VINYL

              1968-69---------CLEAR VINYL

              1970+-----------BLACK RUBBER

I have a set of black mats that are in excellent condition. They came with a truckload of other parts I got when I bought my 69 as a project car. I was hoping they were correct for a 69 but I guess not.

My 69 had clear floor mats in it when I bought it 7 years ago. I have no idea if they were original to the car but several other members have reported having the same ones. They have part numbers 3926485 LH and 3926486 RH on the back. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...970-Floor-Mats

Those are just like the ones I purchased back in 1969.

The part numbers were never available in SERVICE but I'm sure the two together comprised the GM #987441 mat kit.
