I'm not sure what the proper plating would have been. Probably black phosphate, or something like that? (actually dark grey) I'm sure some of the plating experts here can help with this.

Years ago, when I sent parts out for plating, I told the plater guy what color I wanted and the parts came back that color. I never asked what specific plating he did.
