GM tech bulletin on VIN tag spot welds

I seem to recall that there was a GM technical service bulletin related to VIN tags that were spot welded coming loose. I "think" the bulletin instructed dealers to drill and pop rivet the VIN tags back in the original location. This bulletin wasn't specific to Corvettes, as I recall.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Can anyone point me at the bulletin?

I am thinking it would have come out in the mid 1960s.

Ed --- all I can find is from August '64 Chevrolet Service News.

"Many Vehicle Serial Number Plates are being broken loose from the body during the "date of vehicle delivery" stamping operation performed in dealerships. In most cases ... it has been caused by striking the die excessively hard in an attempt to make a legible impression with one hammer blow"

.. they go on to describe how it should be done. Unfortunately, they don't mention what to do with those plates that broke loose.

But it would make sense that they either say: reinstall using "pop rivets", or re-(spot) weld. Wouldn't this apply mainly to '64 models, after they added the "DD" descriptive to the VIN tag, yet before the pop rivets began to be used in the '65 MY ?

Dealers were instructed to add the delivery date to the VIN tag in 63. I have several SB's addressing this problem. It is the primary reason 63's have multiple spot welds. 63 VIN TAG stamp 3_468x600.jpg63 service bulletin Vin Tag A.jpg63 service bulletin Vin Tag 2A.jpg

What other GM cars had the vin tag spot welded in 63-64?

Just about every Chevrolet from at least the early 1950s up through the mid 1960s had stainless steel VIN tags spot welded to the car, usually somehwere in the door jam area. They come loose / fall off frequently as the cars rust / deteriorate.

I have seen many 55-57 Chevys with missing or partially separated VIN tags. I remember looking at a 56 BelAir many years ago. I asked the seller if the vin tag was still on the car. He said absolutely and opened to driver's door to show me. The tag had a little bit of dirt on it. The owner started rubbing the dirt off with his fingers and the vin tag came off and fell to the ground.

It was hard not to laugh..thank goodness it wasn't me rubbing that vin tag.

I did not buy the car, but not because of the vin tag issue.

I really never took notice to the vin tags. I knew 64 Chevelles had the vin riveted to the door jam.

A riveted vin tag (not trrim tag) on a 64 Chevelle doesn't sound right. Check out this web site of examples of 64 Chevelle vin tags, including a couple that have been riveted in place.
Chevelles that went to Canada have a factory riveted vin tag.

A US delivered 64 Chevelle should have a spot welded vin tag.

1965 and later Chevelles have riveted vin tags.

I am pretty sure I remember one of my 1964 Chevelles having spot welded VIN tag int eh door jam. When I needed it (after an accident) it wasn't there.
