But as a direct answer to your question, RE was used for the 327/365hp engine in '64.

I've updated my references, sorry for the confusion caused on this point.

I'm with Mike, the pad stamps don't even need the paint removed to say they don't resemble an original configuration.

And (obviously), a January-built car can't have a February-built engine, and a February-assembled engine can't have been cast in March. Nevertheless, enjoy it! L-76's are fun!

I certainly agree on the pad. Wasn't the cast date also held in some type of holder that kept the digits straight?

              Bob -

The casting date tag was made from individual bronze characters silver-soldered to a brass plate that was fastened to an indentation in the iron or stainless steel pattern.

Its tough paying #s Matching Money only to find out that isn't the case.

I don't know what your recourse is, nor could I say what the difference in price between #s matching Coup 64 and nom 64 in Driver condition is, but the numbers stamped into your engine show there is a discrepancy.

If you got a great deal on the car, maybe its just water under the bridge at this point (but I would still inform the seller to your findings), if you paid OM market value or above, I might look into getting something back to take the sting out.

Wait a minute Phil, my 64 was built on October 8th and the trim tag shows B8.

Yup, I think 63 was the year that used the number for weeks instead of the actual date like 64-67. A1 would be 1st month, first week, etc.

The format interpretation you are using applies to 1963 Corvette only not ’64 and later.

Thanks for all the help guys. Thankfully I did get a good deal on the car and also received boxes full of NOS parts, from interior, engine, sidepipes, bumpers, lights and all rubbers. priced them out for "online" prices for NOS parts and comes up to over $4500.00 so that really helped the price. I have already contacted seller with the findings about the numbers and we are trying to work something out. Thanks Eric

Not only is it a re-stamp, it's just about as bad as any I have ever seen. Utterly crude.
