    1968-1972 Pulley Markings

Recently, Mike Ernst posted a pic of a mark on the water pump pulley of his LT1. This green marking lined up with the yellow paint marking on the hub of his fan clutch. In response, Patrick Hulst posted a pic of the same marking, only his was white.

At the direction of Chuck Berge and Stan Falenski, I've been asked to gather info from members who may have those original markings still present on their car's water pump pulley. Any pics of your past and/or present cars showing this marking would be much appreciated as we are always looking for info that will help in future TIM & JG revisions. If you would, please include year and engine, along with any under hood options.

Again, we thank the membership for their help and participation. Below is the pic Mike posted in an earlier thread...

    Mark,
My partner has a 72, LT-1 with A/C. He has owned the car since 1973 and it is pretty much original. EDIT; Sorry, my initial question was answered.

Having A/C, as I am sure you know, would make it a fairly late built car.

He wanted a new Corvette in 73. When he saw the new 1973, it changed his mind and ended up buying the 1972 Corvette the salesman was driving. It just happen to turn out as a LT-1, air car. Not bad luck at all.

Yeah, Monte...that would be great. Any info you can get is appreciated. Anything from your 454 would be great, too.

      Thanks,

        Mark,
Are you interested in gathering the information on all 68-72 cars? Or, did you use the LT-1 in your initial post just as an example?

EDIT; In thinking about it a little bit, the fact that the LT-1 was not around in 68-69, I just answered my own question.

I will take a look at the 454.

I'll get better photos of at least 2 of the cars later this week, possibly the 71 as well.

This is from 71 350/270 w/ A/C, PS, PB and Auto. Yellow mark but no green slash. This is a very original car. VIN #21467

Just an FTI - Most LT-1's that I seen do have either a green slash or green dab on the upper pulley.

The instructions to match the "yellow" and "blue" marks on the fan clutch and pulley first appeared in the AIM for the 1972 model year. Of course, it's possible the practice began prior to that time.

Does anyone know why that instruction was in the AIM?

I don't know, for sure, but I strongly suspect it was some sort of balance purpose.
