    55 c1 855 Dist.

    855 dist view.JPG855 Didt..JPG

There was an Ebay listing yesterday for a 55 110855 dist. Something doesn't look right.......Date is wrong , If they were used on early 55's How come that casting is the one used on the later 847 Dist. The early 847 Dist. has a different hold down area. Does anyone know what the 855 was used for besides early corvette? I'd love to get more Info. on the 855 distributor if anyone has it. Thanks Bob

the 855 is a corvette only distributor. 55 corvettes use both the early and late 847 housings depending on how early or late the car is. all 855 distributors use grease cups, the 847 uses the tube. the 855 has a external "big mallery" condensor, the 847 does not. up to about car 400 a operating vacuum advance #1116085 is on corvette distributors and then the non-operating vaccuum advance #1116098 is used. on the early 1955 passenger cars the first design distributor with a date into early january 1955 all have a #1116085 vacuum advance. after that the 847 distributors have a 085(not the seven digit 1116085), 100 or 104 stamped on the vacuum advance. 104(1116104) is the number most commonly found today since it was used as a service replacement. there are only a few date codes that are used on 55 corvette and the one on ebay is certainly not one of them. many times when a distibutor was rebuilt or replaced a new tag was placed on the housing. since only the last number of the year is used for the first date code number on the distributor housing the one on ebay can be one rebuilt in the 60s, 70s, 80s......

Thanks guys. it makes more sense now. It's just that I've seen 855 Dist. with both types of casings (hold down area). Now this one with the odd date code really confused me.........
