Correct Part No. for 1960 Water Pump, Low HP

After searching on my GM Parts & Accessories CD-ROM, the water pump is listed as 3769926 (2nd series) and lists 55-60 application. I searched the TDB Archives and the number 3736493 appeared several times as the correct water pump for 55-60. That part # does not show up in GMPartswiki or my GM P&A book (dated to Feb. 1961. All of my research has me confused.

What water pump part no. is correct for a 1960 low HP car?

The unit part number is, basically, irrelevant since this is the part number for the complete waterpump assembly as once supplied by GM. Your chance of finding one of these is about as slim as anything could be. In any event, the original waterpump assembly for your application was, indeed, GM #3769926. That pump was discontinued in August, 1961 and replaced by GM #3787566. Many more supercessions followed, some configurationally incorrect for your application (but functional).

What's important as far as you're concerned at this point in time is the waterpump CASTING NUMBER. For your application the casting number you need is 3736493. These pumps were not dated but this particular casting is hard to come by.

Thanks for explaining that. I have trouble separating unit part numbers from casting numbers. I performed an ebay search for 3736493 water pumps and there are 6 listings with prices ranging from $75 to $175. One refurbished water pump is Buy it Now at $95 (Goat Hill Classics-I have read all about the pros and cons of dealing with Paul). The $95 unit seems to be reasonably priced and it is already rebuilt.

One other thing I should have mentioned. You want a casting with no "T" casting mark. Such a casting mark indicates a casting manufactured at the Tonawanda, NY foundry. No 1960 Corvette small block waterpumps were cast there.

One of the ebay ads has two 493 pumps, one with the "T" and one without; buyers choice.
