Correct black paint for '54 Exhaust

Is there a correct type of black paint for the exhaust of a '54 corvette? For example, should it be matte, or satin, or gloss?

    thanks.

    Rick,

Based on the pictures of '53-54 exhaust systems in Noland Adams' C1 restoration book, I used Dupli-Color Engine Enamel in gloss black on mine after roughing up the aluminized pipes with steel wool and cleaning them well with grease/wax/silicone remover. I figured the Engine Enamel would provide some useful heat resistance for this application. Others might comment on their judging experience in this area, but this is what I did and I'm happy with the result.

Yes, use crappy semi-gloss paint, same as chassi, and apply it like a 4 year old would. That will provide the original appearance.

The exhaust was painted during chassis blackout and it was next to impossible to get full coverage. But the coverage would include the hanger brackets. The purpose of the chassis blackout process was to get enough paint on the various components so they would not rust before the car was sold. Buyers didn't want to buy a car that was already rusting.
