We just finished a 63 Conv. The Problem is the shielding & brackets are all reproduction and fit like %#$& . The car also has repro plug wires and runs bad with the top shield on ( it really smashes the plug & coil wires). With the top shield off it is ok . Anybody have any ideas fixing the problem ?

Re: 1963 shielding & running problems
Bill,
I have an early built car where the original shielding had the three rivets(metal). The reason they went to two rivets was where the third rivet was rubbed one of the spark plug wires and caused a short which caused a miss.
The first thing I did was put a dab of silicone over the rivet to try to stop that short anyway. I eventually went with 90* spark plug boots, but before that I put a piece of rubber on the inside of the shielding.
I also cut two more pieces that sat on top of the distributor cap that held the shielding up just a small enough amount to take a little pressure off the tops of the spark plug wires. Whenever I put it back together, it takes a few tries to get it all to fit in there.
I hate to say, but in figuring all this out I broke the support that holds the coil in it. It was very weak from age, but I still hated to see it go.
The bottom line of the two rubber pieces that were on top of the cap really just took a little pressure off the tops of the wires.
I hope you can understand my explanation. If not, I can send you some pictures.
Best of luck,- Top

Re: 1963 shielding & running problems
When you get your car judged at an NCRS meet one of things you always here is remove the distributor shielding. Trick is to never put the poc on in the first place.

Re: 1963 shielding & running problems
Bill, I am not sure what the difference between the factory and repro top shields , I would think nothing as I have seen them both, I have the repro wires on my 63 and the factory top shield installed with no issues. my car also does crush the wires down on install of top shield. One area I would tell you to check is to make sure that each and every wire is pushed all the way down in to the top of dist cap. if theres one wire that is not, it will find a place to short, and the ignition shield will be close by. If the rivits are a problem try a small dab of 3m strip chaulk, this will remove a little easier than RTV.
When I look under the hood of my car without the shield installed it looks as though something is missing. don't like it myself. I would also try to fab something that fits under thet top shield that does not conduct electricity. maybe cut a heavy duct plastic trash bag and tape to the underside of the top shield.
Good luck, EdNew England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1963 shielding & running problems
Bill, A trick for your 300HP car is to put the low tower distributor cap on it. Instead of paying big bucks go to NAPA and order an RR168. Black with copper cap. No good for judging but great for driving. John- Top
