    1969 Speedometer Cable

Doing a frame off on a 1969 350/350 convertible and have a question on the speedometer cable. After removing the cable from the transmission, it was left hanging down until I removed the dash panel. There was a small amount of 'oil' under the cable end. There was also 'oil' around the mileage reset cable and other areas under the panel. Looking at the cable after removal, the end that attaches to the transmission did not have any seal or anything inside the fitting. Is there some kind of seal to keep transmission oil from migrating up the shaft? Or is there supposed to be some kind of seal in the fitting on the transmission? Can not see inside of this fitting until the body is removed.
    Thanks for any comments,
    Steve

Steve, I believe that if you buy a speedo. housing that goes into the transmission at some of the vendors it will be a newer version and come with a seal already installed. the older corvettes did not have a seal from the factory.

Thanks for the feedback. The cable is in great shape and I hate to trash it. Maybe take the seal from a new one?

I also have 2002 Z06 in Electron Blue. The wife thought the 69 was too hot in the summer and suggested we get another car with the stipulation that it be blue and have a AC. The Z06 is an awsome car.

Steve, The metal housing( Not cable itself) that goes into the transmission tail shaft housing, that houses the driven gear is the part that will have a seal. on it. if its the type that did not have the seal from the factory, the replacement housings come with the seal installed.

The fittings with the seals go back quite awhile, at least to 1969 and I believe quite a while longer. The complete fitting with seal is currently available under GM #345215. The seal, by itself, is available under GM #3869910 (note: GMSPO shows this part number as a "voltmeter bracket" but that's some sort of error; the part is the speedometer fitting internal seal).
