A: The 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS 409. Did it in 4.0 seconds.

2012 Mustang Cobra Jet at 1.5 seconds, but not really production as NOT street legal; Bugatti Veyron at 2.57 seconds is considered the auto world's fastest production car; believe 2011 Corvette ZR1 would be considered the fastest American car 0-60 @ 3.3 seconds

Agree, but MANY of those listed are NOT production cars, but "purpose built" cars; and/or very limited. Which is why I asked the question that I initially asked

I have seen that time for th e 409 before and really question it. It was fast no doubt but there are few even today can hit that mark. But I think to answere your question about AMARICAN PRODUCTION car would be the Zo6.Zr1 with sub 4 second times.
And gasoline internal combustion engine, I think the Tesla electric may be faster.

I have a hard time believing that a 409 Impala or a 65/66 Catalina can achieve those times in showroom stock configuration. The cars tested by magazines are usually ringers.

The current Chevrolet Camaro COPO is the quickest car(1/4 mile;low 9's) ever made by GM in a GM plant available to the general public.

Can anybody prove my statement wrong? Larry

The current COPO Camaro isn't built in a GM plant, isn't available to the general public, isn't street-legal, has no VIN, isn't emission-certified, and can't be registered.

I would think that back in the 60's the quickest production car was the Cobra. A friend of mine had one purchased and had to back out for a tour of duty for uncle sam.
