interior kick panels 65 vett

I am having trouble installing my new kick panel backing plate,carpet and metal support with 3 screws. It doesn't seem to fit tight against the carpet, right underneath the sill plate. It sticks out about 1/2 inch. Do I have to remove the foam inside the vinyl at that point? Very worried about this.

I was able to complete the drivers side kick panel today by modifying the carpet foam and fitting it behind and underneath the sill plate and metal dog leg. It worked out very well. The car in the picture has the same interior color as my car. My wife and I have had this Corvette for 28 years. Give me a call sometime . 570 325-2435.]
