61/62 VIN Plate--Why relocated to steering column

    Hi--

I apologize in advance if this has been covered previously in the Archives, however, I was unsuccessful in properly accessing the Archive function with my question. (Note: I also checked the Complete Corvette Restoration & Technical Guide--Vol. 1 1953 through 1962 with no luck as well).

Question: Why were the VIN plates moved from the driver side door pillar to the steering column (where they were spot welded) on 1961 and 1962 Corvettes?

Thanks in advance for your replies,
    Rob

Maybe GM saw this as an improvement over vin tags being attached with screws.

Security. VIN plate attached with two screws wasn't very secure. GM had to find a place to "weld" the VIN plate, like they did for the metal bodied cars. The steering column was a "reasonable" location that was easily visible.

Moving the VIN plate to the steering column was actually done very early in the 1960 model year for the reasons stated above.
