1965 396 corvette block and 1965 passenger car 396 same 962 block for NCRS Judging???

A friend has a 1965 396 962 block and wants to know if it is correct for judging. It has the 962 casting on the right rear block. Next to the 962 number is another # with a "-2" suffix (he thinks the suffix should be 1 not 2). The left rear portion of the block has "Pass" cast in not "Hi Perf"??? Is this block correct for Corvette???
    Thanks, Jerry

Your question was answered on the other forum. But in short yes all the blocks are the same weather it went into a Chevelle,Impala, or Corvette.

Jerry & Keith many 962 blocks cast in late 65 are the same except they do not have the reinforcement gussets on the front & rear of the intake mounting area . These blocks are 4 bolt main late 65 cast dates made for early 1966 375 HP Chevelles . They are not correct for the Corvette . 1965 Chevelle Z 16 & Impala 962s are the same . Early blocks were PASS. late blocks were HI PERF.

So we are back to a "Pass" Block would not be correct for a '65 396 Corvette...

William ." Pass." blocks are correct for Corvettes . The change was made around May To Hi Perf. I have 16120 and 16718 both are Pass. 16120 has a crooked F . I cant see any other changes in the Pass. To the HI PERF.Blocks . I don't know when or why the ribs were removed ?I have never seen a real 962 Corvette block without ribs and I don't see any other changes between a ribbed and not ribbed block .

Bill --- from all the 396's I look at on eBay, it seems the ribs (front & back side) both on 961 passenger and 962 4-bolt were deleted sometime around H or I (August/September) of 1965, so, as you say, no rib-deletes in Corvettes.

Two rib pics below are off a 2-bolt 961 block E-14-5.

                  There's a 4-bolt 962 on eBay right now:

I-29-5 cast T1103EF assembly stamp. No ribs, but IMO, they were eliminated about 6 weeks earlier

i have ,or rather had, a 942 early 66 425 hp block that had the gussets common to the 962 65 mark 4 blocks installed in 65 vets. this early 66 425 came out of 66 vin 17xx. when i had it apart, looking at the rear surface of the front of the block, was cast 962, even tho the rear flange was correctly cast as a 942. mike

I have a 18,000 vin# 962 block and it says PASS at the rear of the block and not HI PERF, but right above the oil filter assy it does say HI PERF PASS in smaller letters!!!
