On the newer electronic speedos just disconnect the speed sensor wire at the trannie tailshaft, you loose the speedo and cruise but you really save on accumulated mileage. You really don't need the speedo, just follow along with the rest of traffic, you'll be close to designated speed.

I was just trying to fix the digital electronic speedometer on Mrs. Terry's former police car (one of the 1995 Caprice in my sig). The odometer reading goes with the digital module (I have three of them from the salvage yard.)

Come to Chicago Richard. The traffic travels bumper to bumper at 70+ in a 55 zone most of the time, but then there are some times when we go nowhere and it is still bumper to bumper. Most of the time if you don't do at least 70 people will try to force you off the road.

Wouldn't you get a PCM trouble light if you do that.

One Corvette year only requires pulling the fuse as well. Tach etc still work and nothing else of significance is affected. What was GM thinking?

Canister Purge will be inop, cooling fans will be affected (they turn off at 35MPH), and on some systems, IAC is affected, and engine may stall upon sudden deceleration.

Disconnecting the VSS makes sense if you have a 'no miles' trailer queen, that is never driven, and you don't want to put miles on it backing it in and out of the garage or trailer. (The odometer accrues mileage in either direction. Backing up adds miles). but if you drive the car, it really needs VSS. If you don't want to add miles, remove the cluster, remove the rear panel, and unplug the odometer stepper motor from the circuit board. Viola', no odometer, but everything else works.
              That's what I thought.
Similar scenario if you disconnect the speedo on the C4, and a similar workaround would be to pull the cluster and disable the odo drive while leaving the speedo input intact.

On C-5's & 6's your car won't run. I'm pretty sure that is true for the GM fleet. What kinda of car are you talking about?

That would work for some vehicles produced in the '90's but not on anything build today.

Ken; what happens then when your driving your c5/6 at 60-70 on the freeway and you have a speed sensor failure-does the car just die in the middle of the Santa Monica Freeway at rush hour?? That speed sensor failure generated engine shut down could theoretically cause one heck of a crash-mabey even fatalities. With all due regard, I find it hard to accept that lawsuit averse, p.c.correct Chevrolet, would sell any vehicle that upon a loss of a non-primary sensor would just quit.

                      Re: Odometer roll back

I had worked for 27 years in auto sales, 1970-1992. Odometer roll backs were a VERY COMMON. I the past 15 years the government has cracked down on speedometer tampering to the point that one used car dealer i use to sell to was facing jail time. Anyone who thinks tampering is a myth is out of touch. I have personally watched speedometers rolled back many many times.
