    54 Steering Wheel Removal

I've searched high and low and I can't find any instructions for removing the steering wheel horn ring. I don't have access to my ST-12 and I've searched the web and the Chevrolet service manual to no avail. Can anyone tell me the secret to removing the horn ring so I can access the steering wheel retention nut? I thought you just pushed in and turned it to the left but it won't budge. Thanks, Eric

remove the cap , then the chromed horn blowing ring and the horn contact pieces.then remove the nut that secures the wheel to the mast shaft. then get a steering wheel puller that utilizes the pair of drilled and tapped holes in the metal central portion of he wheel. then center he puller's shaft over the center of the mast shaft. mike

How do I remove the plastic cap without breaking it? There's no room between the cap and the horn ring to get anything in there to loosen. Its possible its been modified but it isn't obvious.

they usually pop right out, using a thin narrow bladed slotted screwdriver. mike

Mike, your words made me keep looking for an gap between the cap and the horn ring. I finally got the cap off using a very thin piece of metal. That was the tightest fitting horn cap I have ever seen. It appeared to be glued on or an integral part of the horn ring. Thanks again Mike.

i think(been a few years since i dealt with our 54 horn button) there is a metal retaining ring that embeds in the button. that's what sshould retain the button in the horn ring. mike
