First off.. welcome! Second...post some pics.
What's stamped on the engine pad (just in front of head on passenger side). I believe a single fuel line would indicate a Holley carb, which would make it a 427 car. No small blocks came with Holley's in 68.
You may find a build sheet up under the dash or under the carpet.
Do you have a Trim Tag, attached just above driver side door hinge?Last edited by Mike F.; March 20, 2013, 02:31 PM.- Top

Based on what you describe, I would say the car was originally an L-71 (likely) or L-88 (unlikely). You can obtain the engine components you need to build a correct L-71. The block and cylinder heads would have to come from the used marketplace. The intake manifold, carburetors, and exhaust manifolds could come from either the reproduction market or used. All of the other components you'd need are available used, restored or reproduction. All of this is the good news. The bad news is that putting together a correct L-71 is going to be very expensive. I'd guess $10,000 or more.
Muncie 4 speeds are available rebuilt from many sources. They were not unique to Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Sandy welcome to the NCRS! Your Car was most likely built on a Wednesday and has a built date of K25, meaning june 25 1968. Any markings on the bottom of the differential ? My cars serial number is 2 away from yours. What type and color are the fuel line clamps at the gas tank? Does your car use the rear stablizer bar and is there the Armour around the rear brake lines at the Calipers( looks like a spring around the brake line)? Your car could very well be a 435 hp or the Famous L-88. Engines and trans are easy to find for your car. What color and type of body is yours?- Top

Big block cars have stabilizer bars front and rear, small block cars will only have a front stabilzer bar.

Re: New member 1968 corvette convertible 194678s423534
I read somewhere that if you take a photo of an unreadable tank sticker with a infrared sensitive film (or using a digital camera with an infra red setting) it might well be the text becomes readable (or at least a bit better then with normal visible light). maybe it is worth trying this and by all means, let us know if it worked for you...
If you can get the tank sticker off without damaging it, backlighting may work. Don't use any chemicals to soften the glue, they could erase the type set.- Top

Re: New member 1968 corvette convertible 194678s423534
Thanks Mike . Do you thing this engine has any special value ? To offset the cost of a 427. Maybe someone restoring a camaro. I am using a iPad and have not been able to post pictures yet. Thanks again- Top

Re: New member 1968 corvette convertible 194678s423534
I really doubt that the engine you have will have much resale value. The kind of car it originated in is not the sort of car that is the stuff of high dollar restorations. However, it is a 4 barrel carb 327, so it might have some value. Unfortunately, since it's a Tonawanda small block, the block and heads won't have any value for a Corvette restoration. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
