    1972 gas tank cap

Does anyone know where I can get an original cap for my 1972? Preferable in very good to excellent condition?

1972 used the GM #3994339 gas cap. This cap is still available from GM for a list price of about 45 bucks. If there are any differences from the original cap, I don't know what they are. However, it may be that the Stant Manufacturing logo is a bit different.

Paul/Joe, The local Chevy dealer can get one for me by tomorrow. I know the '72 has "OPEN SLOWLY CAUTION" and "SEALED" embossed into the topside of the cap and the sides are smooth vs scalloped.

What I am not sure of is the design of the original SMC logo. From memory - I think the eBay item has the correct original logo. Your thoughts.

The current GM piece will almost certainly have the modern-day SMC logo. Otherwise, I believe it's identical to the original cap.

As Joe stated the current will just have a large "S" only. The one on ebay has the original style the SM then a large "C" encircling the first 2 letters then it is all inside a full circle or ring for Stant Manufacturing Corporation if I recall correctly.

I have seen the replacement caps they are shaped the same, but the plating in not silver Zinc as the one on E/bay , it is gold diachromate and the smc logo is different.

The eBay cap has the dichromate (gold) over-plate. I don't know if the originals had this finish, or not. In any event, it's easy to remove. Just immerse the cap in a weak acid solution. This has to be done carefully, though, or one will blacken the underlying zinc plating.

At some point in 1972 production or it could be most or all the gas caps had a Dichromate wash finish. That style was used till the introduction of unleaded fuels change the cap.
