Enclosed are two photos of 4 M/Cyl. caps. All 4 caps have a 'USE G-M-C BRAKE FLUID" cast around the perimeter and stamped "5300880" on the 7/8" hex head. The top two caps are stamped "M" & "314" (from 1959 Chevrolets) and the cap on the bottom left is stamped "M" & "292" (from 1960 Chevrolet). These three caps measure about 1.11" in overall length with a 1/2" deep by 1 1/8" baffle. The cap on the bottom right stamped "199" & "M" measures 0.95" in overall length with a 3/8" deep by 1 1/8" baffle.
According to my 1957 Chevrolet Parts Catalog M/Cyl. cap # 5455355 is described as 1 1/4" X 18 thrds. w/baffle 1/2 X 1 1/8"
which matches with the "314" and "292" caps. I believe that the 5455355 cap was also used on the 1957-1960 models.
GM # 5455826 is the cap listed in my 1961 Chev. truck parts catalogs and just described as 1 1/4" X 18 thrds.
Chevrolet Parts History:
GM # 086958 replaced in Oct. 1956 with 5455355
I assume GM # 5455355 was replaced with 5455826 but I have no specific documentation.
GM # 5455826 replaced in March 1962 with 5460820 (plastic cap)
My question:
Is my cap stamped "199" & "M" (GM # 5455826) correct on 1961 models or (GM # 086958) correct on 1953-1956 models?
I would also appreciate any comments about my research.
Dave
