    Plug wire lengths LS5

I have an NOS set of 7 braided plug wires (shrewd purchase at Carlisle about 5 years ago-never counted the number of wires in the box). I have necessary remnants to make an 8th. What are the original lengths of each wire to each cylinder on a 72 LS5? Thanks! No luck on searching old posts.

Per the 1970 parts book, 1-2-3-4 should be 34 inch overall, 5-6-7-8 25 inches. If I can find the prints I'll give the exact original numbers, but I think? I moved them to a filing cabinet in the Barn...here is some food for study while I look, per the AIM, Sheet 10 of the LS-5 indicates Cyl 1-2 use the same wire, 5 and 7 use the same wire, so there are only 6 different lengths...The 8901007 used on Cyl 1 & 2 are 33 inches from the end of the dist terminal to the center of the SP boot where the angle starts, Cyl # 3, is 32 inches 8901008, Cyl #4, is not on the drawing, 8901009 is 30.0 inches, 8901011 is 28.0 inch and 89011012 is 23.5, I hope this helps...

Mike -- a word of caution with service Delco Spark Plug "Wire Units" Gr 2.239 for braided BB sets. I have two of these with part # 8912284 (#458W). If you lay the wires end-to-end, you may find (as Bill mentions) that they have rationalized down the number of different wires to two different part #'s [34" O.L. for cyls # 1,2,3,4; and 25" for cyls # 5,6,7,8] which is drastically reduced from the wires in the AIM. They'll fit, but several will present more slack than a factory installation. And (at the distributor cap end) you'll struggle to get the braid ground eyelets neatly onto the stud terminal on each side. Problem is the service sets didn't worry too much about the varying length of the braid, depending on whether the target 90 degree terminal was on the far or near side of the distributor cap.

I would think that a good set of current reproduction wires, working from original drawings, would solve this problem with the Delco sets.

So the options are (at least for now)
1). Reproductions which are the right length, but have boots that are too short, wires of supposedly marginal quality, and braiding that is too loose, or
2). Originals, which are the incorrect length.
am I missing anything on either?
            thanks,
            Mike

That's about right Mike, unless you can find a true NOS set.

If I remember correctly there are several different lengths on my '72 LS5. I have repro wires and they came with instructions that included the length for each and their correct location. I gan get that later if it will help.
