I am looking for a reputable person-(shop) to totally rebuild a muncie 4speed and change the gearing to a m-21 close ratio from a m-20 wide ratio. Can anyone assist me?

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
I don't know where you are, but the first two I would call would be Paul at 5sppeds.com in South Florida, or Larry at D and L Transmission on Long Island. Two great guys who have both done work for me. I highly recommend either one.

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
I agree with post #3, what's the reason you want to do away with the wide box, what HP engine and rear axle ratio are you running? IMO, if you are driving the car on the street with 3.55 or 3.36, you will like the wide ratio transmission better.- Top

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
The car is a L-72 with a Tremec TKO 5 speed and a 3.70 rear. First, my low gear is real low & short coming off a light-(10.62:1)-and second, the 2-3 shift going thru the gate on the Tremec is a bad nightmare. The motor has more than enough bottom end Tq to start in 2nd if I wanted to. Thats why I want to go to a M-21- Top

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
Dick,
The 10.62/1 sounds like the low/low I had in my Mack truck, are you sure about that. What ratio is the second speed gear, I just don't want you to spend $$ and not be happy.- Top

Change your rear end gear. It's cheaper and you'll get better mileage to boot. Set your original pumpkin aside for the future. The car is a L-72 with a Tremec TKO 5 speed and a 3.70 rear. Otherwise your next thread will be about how your car revs too fast on the highway.

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
Patrick, it sounds like part of the problem the OP is having is with the crummy 2-3 shift known with the Tremec, you can not speed shift them like you can with a Muncie but they can be modified with a face plated gear set for speed shifting by Liberty Transmissions.Last edited by Scott M.; March 14, 2013, 12:15 PM.- Top

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
That may be, but going with an M21 will make his "low gear is real low & short coming off a light" problem change to a "my Corvette screams at 3500rpm on the higway and how can I fix this" problem.Patrick, it sounds like part of the problem the OP is having is with the crummy 2-3 shift known with the Tremec, you can not speed shift them like you can with a Muncie but they can be modified with a face plated gear set for speed shifting by Liberty Transmissions.
Sounds like he needs to change the shifter as you suggest and swap out his rear end.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: mUNCIE REBUILDING
The 10.62 is the product of the 1st gear (2.87) times the rear (3.70).
The motor is built using Callies crank & rods, Keith Black Icon pistons, Ultradyne mechanical flat lifter cam, Comp promag rockers, Beehive springs, Titanium retainers, Big SS valves, MSD, QFT-830 carb, Aeromotive feul system, Plus ARP studs everywhere. It's at 461 CID and made an easy 494 HP @ 6800 & 479 TQ @ 3600 on the dyno. It will run 3000 @ 70 MPH all day in 4th gear.
The only problems I have which prompted me to begin writing
is the short 1st gear and the crumby 2/3 shift.- Top
