Delco alternator rear case "DELCO-REMY" casting character size variations

I have noticed on all the 1964-1968 alternators I have seen the rear side of the case at the bottom it has cast into it "Delco-Remy".

I have noticed two different size characters used. I am wondering if one or the other is earlier or later usage than the other, or is one , or both correct for any year and the two sizes are simply due to different molds used at the same time.

I have also seen another version that has an extra mounting boss for an additional bracket bolt that was never used on our cars but certainly would not have affected anything if used ( I have seen this case on many Vettes, but do not know if original to the car) Obviously a design feature intended for other models but possibly would have been used anyway as an acceptable interchange in Vette usage?

Is it possible this case with extra boss was used on our Vettes in any application? ( With nothing attached to it of course) I have not been able to find any info on these, anyone have any?

Pics of each version are below, including the character size difference on the models with the extra boss also.

    Bill,

In years past I had as many as 50 or so GM alternators from the mid to late 1960's but never studied the rear frame (or case as you call it). The service part number for the frame is 1959827 in Gr. 2.297 as listed in my 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1968 Chevrolet parts catalogs. GM # 1959827 was replaced with GM # 800396 in July 1969 as per Chevrolet Parts History.

I still have my unrestored 1100693 alternator dated 6 B 17 that was on my 1966 Corvette (Feb. 24th body build date) when I bought it in 1979. I will post a photo of the back side of it when I get a chance as it is in a box in my garage.

My Delco-Remy Service Parts Catalog (May 1972) lists # 800396 as the service part number of the frame for the 1100693 alternator and many other alternators.

      Bill,

Enclosed is a photo of an original 1100693 alternator dated 6 C 10 that is currently on my 1966 Corvette (Feb. 24th body build date). It's not the correct date but I don't care as I do not go to car shows. I had it rebuilt back in the late 1980's by a local alternator & starter rebuilder in my town with instructions not to change any external parts. When I find my original unrestored 1100693 alternator dated 6 B 17 I will post a photo of the back frame (aka case).

My 6 C 10 alternator appears to look the same as your photo # 2 based on the "DELCO REMY" casting.

          Dave and Jim,
Thanks to you both for the pics, looks like both are the larger characters on yours

            Jim,

As far as I can tell your "5 C 8" rear alternator frame (aka case) is the same as my "6 C 10" reat alternator frame including the "DELCO REMY" casting.

The C.E. frame or back half with the extra boss is a passenger car piece. I don't believe it was ever used on the Corvette. I have seen several variations on the Delco Remy logo you reference;large and small and some with slightly different characters.I can find no pattern to the usage. One version has Made in Canada instead of Made in USA,it was not used on the Corvette.

                Thanks John!

Its probably different mold usage then, just mixed in as I am sure there were many , multiple molds used at any one given time period. Extra boss, as I suspected, no Corvette usage.
                Thanks for responding!

I finally found my original 1966 Corvette (Feb. 24th body build date) 1100693 alternator dated "6 B 17" (photo below).
The "DELCO REMY" casting appears to be smaller when compared to my "6 C 10" alternator.

                      Alan,

The alternator in your 3rd photo must be dated July or August 1967 as the circular part (maybe a condenser) directly above the "DELCO REMY" casting is dated "7G19" (July 19, 1967)

As John indicated, mixed usage, this one has the smaller characters.

                              Bill,

I did a little research using all my vintage 1964-1969 Chevrolet parts catalogs and 1965-1973 Chevrolet Parts History manual and determined that the 1964-1968 alternators used part # 1959827 for the slip ring end FRAME which does not have the mounting boss. The 1969 models w/1100834, -36, -37, -38, -39, -41, -42, -43, -45, -46, -47 alternators used the 800396 slip ring end FRAME which does have the mounting boss.

The 1969 Corvettes w/1100825, -33, -59 alternators used the 1971526 slip ring end FRAME. There currently is a thread about the 1100833 alternator slip ring end FRAME.

GM # 1959827 was replaced with GM # 800396 in July 1969 (for parts sold over the counter) which does have the mounting boss.
