    Re: Pf 25 1989

Unless I missed it none of you mentioned a distinguishing characteristic of a '84 to maybe 91 PF 25 filter. Tom Barr and I learned this years ago when he and others were writing the first C4 judging manual.
Look at the bottom of the filter. See the round circle. The later AC servicement filters had/have a small circle about the size of a quarter.
The real deal filter has a circle that is a tad bigger than a silver dollar!!!
Look in the first C4 manual at a real deal black NOS filter. That belongs to old JD here and it came from the assembly line. If you bought a new 84 Corvette and went to the store then next day for an oil filter you got a blue one. No PF 25 filters were sold over the counter. At least that is what I have been told over the years.
Look at the decal on that NOS 84 filter in the manual. Nice original decal isn't it. If any of you want instructions on how to place your decal (if you can find it) contact me and I will send the installation instructions. But don't make the mistake I did on my May 83 car.
I put the decal on before I installed the black filter. When the filter was on you the nice judges could hardly see the new decal at all as I recall. John

Very nice Paul and Dave. My 84 was the first C4 judged to have a correct Black oil filter with repro decal on it as I recall. Would not have happened if it weren't for my pal Tom Barr.

Dave and others. Here are my instructions for installing a decal on the PF25. Fits 84 till about 91.
Located exactly 5/8" down from extreme top edge of filter. Does not include the rubber gasket thickness. Decal is upright just like the 82 down style PF25.

If anyone bites at this price, I might be convinced to sell one of my UPF-25's at that price.

              John----

The "large circle" center configuration was not unique to PRODUCTION line oil filters. It was used for SERVICE filters, too. At some point, the configuration changed from large to small for both PRODUCTION and SERVICE filters. Just when that was, I do not know. Attached is a photo of a SERVICE PF-25 with the "large circle". This one is from about 1977 but the "large circle" continued well after that time.

Joe, Thanks for the nice photos. Iw as aware that the filters with the big circle were readily available for many years. I just didn't get into the explanation properly.
With a little searching on Ebay, etc one can easily come up with the correct configuration PF25. Or if it's a driver the PF 25 with the quarter size circle on the bottom.
I used to buy orange Fram filters at the local auto store that had the big circle on the bottom. Now this was a long time ago when I did that. I painted them black, put a decal on them and gave them to my son to peddle at Carlisle.
Now I am much too busy to mess with filters but it was fun at the time.
By the way the placement of the decal was/is not an exact science as we well know. Thanks, John

                  John-----

Your use of the Fram filters for creating "reproductions" must have been a LONG time ago. MANY years ago Fram dropped the flutes on the bottom of the filter and went to a completely "smooth" configuration. No one could make one of these look like an original AC.

And, yes, placement of the label was anything but a "precise science".

Lyndon I would use the blue AC Delco service replacement. It's only a 2 point deduction.
