Off Corvette Topic - '68 Firebird inspection East Islip, New York

    Hello,

I'd like to ask if there's somebody close East Islip, New York who could have a look at a '68 Firebird currently auctioned on ebay located in East Islip, New York.
A '68 FB is my favourite sixties car beside my C2. Since my '65 is sufficient regarding hp a docile FB would be ok.
From the ebay name some Corvette affinity might be infered.

    Regards
    Oliver

          Oliver,
My first car was a '67 Firebird convertible w/326 automatic. Just looking at the pictures the car looks right to me as an original car, right down to the worn out piping on the drivers seats. It does say it's had a repaint doesn't say with what. If you find anyone to look at it pay attention to the rear quarter panels above the rear wheels, mine was starting to rot out really bad there when it was only 6 years old. Also check in see of wheel opening modings were standard, mine was a base car and had them and I don't seem them on that car, it might have been an option.

Just a warning it's going to be dog compared to your '65. The old drum brakes leave a lot to be desired too.

Vinnie, I would spend some time under the dash looking for mud staining and sediment/sand or other evidence of flooding. The car looks like it has not been under water, but it doesn't hurt to check. All of the damged vehicles from the storm went somewhere. I recall that in my area after some past flooding, flood cars were around and they did'nt show up in the flood car database because they had not changed title. I've actually found two that looked fine and smelled fine until you got under the dash.

Not really they are pretty simple cars and it's a base model so there is no hanky-panky going on with that. Pull up the trunk mat and look for signs of rust or repairs. I had some rust issue around the parking lights too where the front valance panel meets the front fenders that was changed slightly from ’67 to ’68 to accommodate mandatory side marker lights. It should have shoulder harnesses clipped inside the roof I see it has the mating belt seat. Originally all the Firebird emblems had coloring treatment like show below. I think that only lasted about 3 years and emblems looked like the ones on that car.

Those look like Goodyear Bias Ply Polyglass tires. I don't think they have made them in 30 years. Unless they are reproductions I go faster than 10 mph on them.

                          Vinnie,

Just a thought - take a big plastic coated magnetic with you. That should make it easier to check for bondo in the typical rust areas.
