    Belt configuration

It is a 1963, 327 ci, 250 hp. The alterantor belt is too close to the bottom radiator hose. I have the hose on correctly. My thought is I have the belts on incorrectly. It has power steering. The crank pulley has 3 grooves. The water pump pulley has 2 grooves. On the crank pulley, I have the alternater belt on the groove closest to the block. The middle groove is empty. The groove closet to the radiator is used for the power steering belt.
On the water pump pulley, the alternater belt is on the groove closer to the engine. The groove closer to the radiator is emptly
I am hoping the answer is the alternater belt goes on the middle groove on the crank pulley and the groove closer to the radiator on the water pump pulley. Yes or No? Thanks so much!!

Well, I don't know if I can say "yes" or "no", but here is what I can say:

First of all, you have to know that you have the correct pullies. They should be as follows"

crank REAR: GM #3744043 or 3747479 (this is the 2 groove REAR pulley)

crank FRONT pulley (p/s pump driver pulley) GM #3751232 (this is the one groove front pulley sandwiched onto the rear)

    waterpump: GM #3790356

    alternator: GM #1958095 or 3792460

p/s pump: GM #3770509 (this is a stamped steel, "pancake" style pulley)

Unfortunately, you might find that some of the pulleys have no numbers stamped on them which makes identification difficult.

In any event, both grooves of the 2 groove waterpump and 2 groove crank pulleys should align. However, only one set of grooves (i.e. the front or rear set) will align with the alternator pulley. So, if you have the correct alternator pulley that will establish which set of crank/waterpump pulley grooves the belt should track in.
