Manual and Dick------
....but master cylinders with the same casting numbers after about 1972 did not have the bleeders, including those sold in SERVICE for 1967+ applications. Check for a date code on the forward brake line boss. If one is present, it will help confirm that the master cylinder is not original for a 1969.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Ralph----
I've not yet been able to confirm just when the master cylinder bleeders ended so I usually just say "after 1972". I think it was sometime in the 1973-74 period but I'm not even sure about that.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 master cylinder variation without bleed screws
Thanks for the reply guys . I have done quite abit of research on this forum and other places regarding the original master cylinder and thank you Joe for all your informative research . This is where it gets interesting as ive already checked the date code stamp in small font on the forward machined surface for the brake line . My car is an unrestored december 68 built car and the master cylinder date is spot on for the car .Ive compared the font to other ones with pics posted , and im confident it hasnt been restamped etc . Perhaps i should post up a pic . Is there a possibility there is another variation of the cylinder offered for the 69 model . the cylinder looks like its been on the car foreverManual and Dick------

I've never seen a 1967-70 known-original master cylinder that did not have bleeder valves. Whether original or not, it would not be considered typical of factory production. What is the 4 digit date code, what 2 alpha character code is stamped on the front of the master cylinder, and what is the casting number of the master cylinder? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 master cylinder variation without bleed screws
Joe ,
the casting number is 5480346 . ive triple checked the 8 in that casting and it definately doesnt look like a 6 following other discussions on that matter . the date code stamping on the machined boss is 8292 . there is no stamping on the front . The cars build is 27th Dec 68.
Hope this sheds some more light on the matter !!- Top

I absolutely assure you the third digit of the casting number is a "6".
The no-semi-circular-machined-surface-with-broadcast code on the front of the casting is another feature of later master cylinders, not those used in the 1967-72 period.
The "8292" could be the 292nd day of 1978. This master cylinder was still in production for PRODUCTION and SERVICE at that time.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 master cylinder variation without bleed screws
The 1-1/8" bore master cylinder is still available today from GM under GM #18009460. Earlier assembly part numbers were 5461184, 5469399, 2622249, and 18001004. However, the 18009460 is not a Moraine manufactured master cylinder and, if it ever was, has not been in quite some time. Just when the Moraine-manufactured cylinder ceased (and with it the 5460346 casting), I do not knowIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 master cylinder variation without bleed screws
Ive looked at this casting number and its definately an 8 not a 6 . the 6 on the last digit has a different type of casting shape to the 8 all together . there is no doubt in my mind its a 8 unless it was a foundy stuff up on the manufacturers part and should of been a 6 . is there a possibilty there were 2 casting numbers available at the time . thanks for your replies !!!- Top

Lots of folks think it's an "8". However, no part numbers (casting numbers are a part number for a casting) in the 548xxxx series were ever released by any GM division. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
