    C2 (64) - Understanding my Nov 63 car - two things

    1. I assume my wiiper motor has been changed. It has blue metallic looking paint on the lower half of the motor case. What should it look like?

    2. As I'v implied before, my car had a "restore to sell" job done on it. Looks good but its up to me to find out where the short cuts were taken. I got around to shocks yesterday. I for sure have two different ones on the back and a third different one on the left front. Couldn't see the RF. All painted correct gray. Maybe one of the four is original or correct. What should the numbers/marking look like?

Larry, the wiper motor housing is natural aluminum and the motor housing is a cad. plating. as is the washer housing cover. The washer pump housing is nat. aluminum. The blue colored paint is used in the aftermarket ,generally the company A-1 remanufactuing.

Shock part numbers are in both the gudging guide and the Assembly manual, and they depend on the suspension package the car was built with. The front shocks would be coded ED via a sticker and the part number 3851100 stamped onto the shock housing, The F-40 would have an EA sticker and part number 3832518. Rears would be 3186907 or 3171489 for Z-06

Early '64 shocks may be black, not gray.

These are the original rear shocks as removed from our '64 roadster - built in early-September of 1963:

What are the #s on your black rear shocks - I ask because ZO6 shocks in 1963 were reportedly marked with blue paint, as yours appear in the photo provided.

They are numbered 3186907 and dated 224-63.

Todd, looking at the pics it appears that the black is paint and not the general black coating they put on the underbody - is this right? And it appears they were blue with a black overcoat - does this seem right from your inspection? And regardless of the coating type, did it cover the entire lower section, even where it is normally inside the upper cover? I sent you a private message just asking if you could post complete pics.

Larry, remember that items like shocks were made either by an outside vendor or a another division, and they were always painted prior to being shipped to the factory. The black asphaltic coating that you reference was applied after the frame components were assembled, and has nothing to do with the painted finish of the individual components. If you look closely at the bottom of the shocks where the black paint has chipped, there is no evidence of blue paint underneath (at least I can't see any).

                    Larry:

Here are a few photos of the shocks taken in better light. They do appear to have been painted black overall and then the blue inspection marks were applied over the black.

                    I hope these help.

                    Regards,
                    Todd
