1962 Steering Column Wire Cover Question

I need some help…again.

On a ’62 Vette steering column (this may apply to earlier models as well) there is a wire cover plate attached with one screw on the passenger side that covers the turn signal switch wires and the horn wire as they exit the column. The column itself is painted black…but some information we have suggests that this plate was originally painted charcoal.
Is this correct?

Bill, My car is original white paint w/red interior if that helps any.

Bill, where does that "information we have" come from? I've seen a whole bunch of black 61-62 originals.

Hi Mike,

A restorer friend of mine thought he remembered seeing originals painted charcoal...wasn't sure he had ever been able to confirm it. I'm now repainting the steering column and just wanted to be sure.
