    Positioning of Exhaust Tips

Nearing completion on installation of new undercar exhaust system on a previously side pipe car. I am looking at the assembly manual UPC 8 A4 and it does not give the dimension that the exhaust tips should be placed onto the muffler pipes. There is about a 4 inch adjustment available. I understand that the tip should be centered in the bezel opening but at what depth? Either how far from where the extension end to the muffler or how far should the tip protrude from the furthest edge of the bezel?

    Thank you

IMHO the top of the tip should be nearly even with the trailing edge of the bumper. So if you are standing over your lt. or rt. bumper, you should be able to look down and barely see the top of the exhaust tip.

That's way too far out, Gary. What you normally see is the top of the tip sticking out 1-2" from the top of the bezel. I cannot tell you if this was TFP or not.

Paul may be on to something there. If it is any indication, take a look at the 68 dealer brochure. Inside they have a couple pix with fifferent lengths protruding out. My reason for thinking that the trailing edge of the bumper was the right locations was so that the exhaust fumes don't exit so close to the body at idle.

Thank you for your responses, I actually ended up placing the ends of the tips to line up with the closest edges of the bumpers towards the body. I tapped a string to the inside edge of the bumpers and then dropped the string using it like a blumbob to line the ends the same. They look good to me.

You're right, Jack. It's form versus function, the antithisis of form follows function. Do you place the tips out far enough to prevent staining the bumpers, or do you follow the styling cues and put them close to the body, and spend a lot of time cleaning. I always look at the backs of C1's for this very reason. There are some pretty crazy interpretations there.
