Canadian Window Sticker Prices vs. American Prices

    Hi Everyone,

My 67 was sold new in Canada (Synder Automobiles in Montreal Quebec) and I'd like to know how did the window sticker pricing (List Price) for the car & options differ from a car sold new in the USA?

Were the Canadian prices adjusted for the difference in the exchange rate of the day?

Retail prices of cars sold in Canada are just as heavily influenced by local market conditions as they are by currency exchange rates. This applies to many many goods in fact. Although the differences in prices are frequently insignificant, there's still some items that are inexplicably overpriced here. It irritates me no end that a Michelin tire retails for about 30% less anywhere in the US than it does even at the cheapest retailer in Canada- where it was made.

Kurt --- can't answer for 1967, but here's a new '72 on the dealer's lot in Toronto. You can probably compare with the (U.S.) prices in the NCRS pocket spec guide. Certainly exchange rate had an effect, as well as the maddening "Canuck surcharge" that Mike references. (see window sticker thumbnail below big pic). I believe these window stickers were typed and applied by GM Canada, not St. Louis.

Wayne's example shows that Canadian sticker prices were about 20% higher than in the US, despite the fact that the dollar was at parity in 1972. Ouch.

That's pretty interesting. Are you sure the differences are not due to taxes? When I lived in Norway, the government added lots of taxes onto individual options, but those were not shown on the window sticker, just the total, but the dealers weren't getting the money.

            Our taxes are displayed separately.

Found a Canadian-delivered '67 in my files, but not the window sticker; rather the dealer order. A Goodwood green L71 convertible, black leather, whitewalls, 3.70 posi, radio, full tint.

Comparing with the NCRS pocket spec guide, the prices written beside the option description and RPO code seem to vary between 9 to 13% more than the U.S. prices. Subtracting the options from the total, the base convertible seems to be $ 4607, or 11% higher than stateside. I don't know what the dollar conversion rate was at that time.

Caveat is this buyer (deceased a year ago, still owned the car) had a relative who was part owner of the dealer (Howard Elliot Motors, Brampton, Ontario), so the prices charged might be heavily discounted. And nowhere do I see delivery costs. So if anything, the cost to Joe Blow walking in off the street might have been still higher.

Our dollar was worth an average 92 cents US in 1967.
