    66 Headlight wiring harness

Can anyone tell me if the headlight wiring harness goes underneath or over the headlight motor supports. It would make sense if it went under the supports however I have a 67 and the harness goes over the supports. I am not the first owner of the 67 so that is either correct or was the easy route for a previous fix. Can't tell from the AIM and no picture that I can find in the restoration book. While I am at it is the short wire to the limit switch on the top or bottom of the limit switch.
    Thanks for the help.

    Joe -

The wire routing illustrations in the Assembly Manual aren't much help, but I prefer them routed as shown in the photo below; others may differ.

      Thanks John,
That is one great picture - answers so many questions.
My headlight support brackets are black - should they be stripped clean as yours are?

That's not mine - just a file photo; the brackets should be semi-gloss black.

Joe if you are going for 100% correct the motors themselves should not be painted black as in Johns picture. The motors were left raw..

Thanks for all of the help. especially the picture.
My brackets are black and my motors are not painted. But most important of all the wiring harness is in and I am off to another part of the project. It is good to get something done and off the list.
            Thanks again for the help.

Is service part 2983580 correct for 66-67 Corvettes? My old notes say 63-65 only, but I wonder what's the difference.

I didn't find this number in the archives. That is sort of a surprise...

              Thanks!

According to the AIM, '66 part number was 6289375. Service versions are generally functional, but with detail changes.the 6289375 was also the service harness in the '68 parts book for 1966 apps, with the 2983580 used, still called out in the '68 book as applicable to '63-65

                  Tom,
GM # 2983580 is listed in my 1966 Chev. Parts Catalog (Oct. 1965) as the headlamp harness asm. for 63-65 Corvettes. GM # 2983580 is also listed in the 1965 Corvette AIM (UPC 12, A10).

The 1966 Corvette AIM lists GM # 6289375 (6-3-65, was 6287853 harness) as the headlamp harness asm. (UPC 12, A10). My 1967 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Feb. 1967) lists GM # 6289375 in Gr. 2.480 for the 66 Corvette and is described as gen. and forward lamp harness asm. GM # 6289375 is not listed in my 1966 Chev. Parts Catalog.

My 1969 Corvette Parts Catalog (Oct. 1969) lists GM # 2983580 for 63-65 Corvettes in Gr. 2.480, GM # 6289375 for the 66 Corvette and GM # 6292088 for the 67 Corvette.

                    Re: 66 Headlight wiring harness

Thanks guys. I see that 6289375 has both firewall plugs. The older application, 63-65 Headlamp harness number 2983580 only has one firewall plug. There was another separate under-hood harness for '63-'65 Corvettes.

I think the number 6292088 introduced fuse-able links for 1967...?

Yu are correct, 63-65 was two separate harnesses, '66-67 were two connections at the firewall but all wiring integrated into one harness, and '67 introduced Fusible Links, causing another part number change.
