65 standard column turn signal switch repair plate o-ring

What is the purpose of the o-ring supplied with the replacement plate? The replacement plate is a GM part and packaged in a GM marked bag. The original plate had no o-ring between the replacement plate barrel fit and lower plate. The fit between the new replacement plate and the old plate is tight on my car.

I am going to take the liberty to resurrect Dave Kitch's thread as there was no response to his question. Is the O ring that Dave asks about required? I cannot find a reference to it in any GM publications (AIM, '64 shop manual). One vendor sells the O ring - comments will be appreciated.

FOUND IT! The O-ring is an OEM installed component.

Great illustration can be found in a 1965 Corvette Service Bulletin titled, "Turn Signal Switch - Failure to Cancel". SB # is DR # 706, Section XII., October 26, 1964.

The 64 turn signal system is identical to the 65 - thus, this bulletin is applicable. I found the SB on the Corvette Action Center website: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...ncel-1209.html
