I ordered a bunch of stuff from a reputable Corvette supplier including a throw out bearing, and the bearing I got was in Made in China. I simply don't want a Chinese bearing in such a hard to replace location. My old catalog gives 908093 as the GM part number but that number is long obsolete. What is the current number for a GM part? Is it a Chinese part also. Does NAPA sell a US made bearing?

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
Patrick,
When I first read your thread I thought you meant you were going to throw out (as in throw in the trash) Chinese bearings.
I had the same deal when I bought a new slave cylinder for my C5 that was an ACDelco. The box said made from parts made in US and China. Maybe if went to the dealer it might have been sourced from US, I don’t know? I went ahead and put it in because I had the car already torn down and didn't want to wait. It did seem to work ok for who knows how long?
I just opened the steering box kit last night I bought for my '65 from a major Corvette supplier; it also contained bearings from China. I'll probably take them to a local bearing house and see if can match up the parts with ones made in US and trash the Chinese parts.
When I ordered wheel bearings I specified Timken Bearings and seals. Even some of the Timken seals were made in Indonesia.

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
I think you'll be hard pressed (pun intended) to find a US made bearing for that application. Years ago I used to use a phone book sized catalog from a company called bearings inc. which had a part number cross reference between manufacturers...- Top

I've started to email the vendors before ordering, just got all Timken F&R wheelbearings from Volunteer for the 67.- Top

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
Patrick, I am not a big lover of the quality of the parts made in China.I recently had a issue with the pilot bearing in my 63 that was bronze type bushing that had powdered iron that failed in quick fashion. if you replacing this part also take a magnet to it. I got the correct one from National bearing.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
The online parts suppliers (not Corvette vendors, e.g. rockauto.com is one example) that I use still show National and SKF name brand throw-out bearings available. These are both high quality companies IMHO, although for all I know they may have them manufactured in China too these days. But I'd be more confident in the brand name that something repackaged from a Corvette vendor.- Top

The current part number for the GM bearing is GM #19245400. This is a very recent supercession from the previous part number. Where is it manufactured? That I do not know. Lots of bearings these days do come out of China. I don't like those, either, although their quality is far better now than it used to be. Want a REAL high quality bearing? They come from a place not too far from China called Japan. They used to be considered junk, too. Not now, though. The very best bearings in the world are made in Japan. When I can get one, I'll take it over any other. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Mike------
All Timken bearings are high quality. I prefer them to most others. However, while virtually all Timken bearings used to be manufactured in the USA, that's not how it is now. Brazil is a common country of origin and there are others. You find out where when you carefully inspect the bearing or the box it is supplied in.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
I bought Luk clutch kit. very happy with product. I think we have to look at how many miles we are placing on the vehicle and what kind of driving are we doing ( racing ) If the bearing spec is the same I have no problem buying a part from Japan or Mexico. Very little choice at this point. The next time you fly realize many parts are made from all around the world. Just my 2 cents. Walmart seems to be the mentality of the world now .

Re: Chinese Throw Out Bearing
Try your local auto parts stores many still have old dusty stock in their ware house. I found a clutch and throw out bearing made in USA at a small auto parts in North Carolina small town almost three years ago. Price was cheap ($90) as they seemed glad to sell it. The box had a 1/4" of dust on it............- Top
