Opinions on this Starter Core Please

I have a '69 L36 w/ 4spd and I need a correct starter. I found this core for sale and very reasonable price. However, the 68-69 TIM&JG indicates there should a single digit (1 - 8) after the date code indicating the line number. The TIM&JG also indicates that the field coil screws should be cross-head, not slots. I would have the core restored by John Pirkle. Of course, I would need a correct solenoid added.

Not all starters have the additional number or letter so I would say your starter is OK. The field screw is an item I learned from John Pirkle Sr. many years ago if the 4th number is a 7 a slotted screw head and if an 8 a cross-recessed head.

      Thanx Paul,

I assume John will be able to replace the coil screws while he's restoring the unit. I sent him an email with the pictures attached.

This is a starter that probably went through a commercial rebuilder's operation at some point. In those operations the starters are broken down to their component pieces, reconditioned as necessary, and then rebuilt starters are built up from the mostly used components. This is just how the starters were originally manufactured except that then the pieces were all new. Most likely, the only part of this starter that's original to the frame (the part with the stamped numbers) is the frame. The slotted head field coil shoe screws were what was in the bin when the rebuilt starter was assembled. I'm sure that John Pirkle has plenty of the cross-recess screws to use as replacements. Then, he can use these slotted screws on some earlier starter that had its original screws replaced by cross recess.

This starter does look like it has the correct nose for an 1108400 starter even though it's likely not the one that was originally mated to this frame. There are only 3 basic configuration noses ever used with any 1108xxx starter.
        In Appreciation of John Hinckley

I will NOT be at the Expo. Corvettes at Carlisle will be my next sales show. I will be at the regional at Bowling Green.
