1969 Windshield LOF Logo Details / Photos please!

I am replacing the windshield for a coupe with a Feb 3, 1969 trim tag (G03) and Feb 5, 1969 build date, but do not have the original windshield to compare the logo to. I have seen photos of 1970+ LOF logos, so I don't need more of these.

I am planning on using Pilkington Classics. Yes, I can rely on them for this info, but I would like to check here first before pulling the trigger.

I am choosing January 1969, as windshield date codes are typically close to the build date. For a January 1969 date code, I know the LOF date code is NV. The original side windows have date codes of AX (Sept 68) and VX (Dec 68). I believe the LOF logo typically is etched on the outside, and viewed correctly from the inside, though on one side window it is etched on the inside.

From the latest NCRS guide, all windshields were Safety Plate, so I assume a SAFETY PLATE marking. My shaded side windows have Safety Flo-Lite logos and are marked SOFT-RAY but not SHADED. I believe shaded windshields are marked SHADED SOFT-RAY.

    Open questions:

    1) Was there a DOT mark in January 1969, and if so what was it? From an excellent piece on Camaro glass at http://www.camaros.org/glass.shtml, it looks like LOF started DOT marking sometime in Jan 69, so a DOT mark may or may not be present. By Feb 69 (for Camaros) DOT markings were likely universal.

    2) What was the manufacturing plant for Corvette windshields? Was it M4 as seen on Camaros for laminated windshields?

I think the entire Jan 69 logo should look like the following (with LOF enclosed in the shield), can anyone confirm or better yet send a photo?

    SHADED
    SOFT-RAY
    |L |
    SAFETY | O | PLATE
    AS1 | F| NV
    LAMINATED
    M4 (?)

The M4 is a designator for the glass type. -- i.e. shaded, tinted, and so on. I am not sure if those standards were dictated by some government agency or are glass industry standards. But the page you cited has some things to say about these marks down toward the bottom. In any case it is surely NOT the manufacturing plant.

You are correct, M4 is the model number for a shaded, 1/4", AS1, laminated plate windshield. So the question 2) is did Corvettes use the same M4 model number as Camaros (last line of logo)?

        Robert,

The date code and manufacture's logo is important however where I see the most point loss on reproduction windshields is in the shaded tint band. I do not believe at this time, anyone is manufacturing a correct one. There are a number of threads on this subject. Be prepared to have some point loss on the reproduction windshield even if the manufactures' logo is correct.

My alternative is to show up with no windshield, so there is only upside from here ;-)

Since the fish aren't biting, let me rephrase what I am looking for ;-)

Can those with an original 1969 windshield look at their windshield logo for the following:

            a) Is the last line a DOT mark (ie DOT 15)?
            b) Is there a line with a model number or a model designator after the DOT mark (ie M4)?
            c) what is your trim tag date?

Robert, here's a photo, I'll get a better one tomorrow. The car was built in October '68. Chris080.jpg

Thanks Chris! I am able to get most of the info from this photo. AX date code is Sept 68, one month before your Oct 68 build. Last line uses the same M4 model number as Camaros of the same vintage. No DOT mark.

                SHADED
                SOFT-RAY
                SAFETY [LOF] PLATE
(cut off in pic, likely AS1) [LOF] AX (Sept68 date code)
                LAMINATED
                M4

Now I am curious to see later dates into calendar 1969 to see if DOT codes appear in Jan, Feb or later

                  Robert,
I cannot help with later dated 69' windshields, but here is a original early 68 JX dated LOF windshield, correct thickness, correct tint band etc.

Thanks Joe, excellent photo! To confirm, the etching is on the outside and the logo is properly viewed from the inside?

That is correct. The windshield is currently sitting in my basement, so a bit easier to snap the pic, but again
etched on the outside, readable from the inside.
                      Regards,

                          Robert,
I have the original windshield in my 69' with G28 build code, AS-1 NV, I can take a picture if you want but it will be a week before I can send
it to you. Car is at a different location.

                            Richard,

All I need to know is if the last line is "M4" or "DOT 15 M4". Picture is a bonus. I did find a Jan 69 NV side window picture that has the DOT 15 mark (below), so I suspect that LOF transitioned to DOT marking in Jan 69, just like they did with Camaros. I am still looking for someone with an NV windshield to confirm.

                            Thanks,
                            Robert
