Jonney, Big thing is the tires on you 84 are one of a kind. So are the lock nuts and the tools that go with them in the colored bag.
I had a May 83 car that that I saved the original tires from. Was going to put them on for judging but the car got stolen and that was the end of that. Yeah was a big robbery by my ex.
Look in the C4 judging manual as my car was used extensively by Tom Barr and others in the making of the first C4 manual. Although the car rode like a coal truck I will always miss it.

john, i have the locks and tool not the bag. i would give anything to find the original tires for my 84 among other things such as the colored bag and wheels also the battery this would complete my car.

            Johnny,

I don't know if the JM allows it but I know for fact some early '84 non-Z51s had 8.5" front and 9.5" rears, mine was around 1600th made. The oddity ran clear into the summer of 1983.

From what I understand the supplier was running short on 8.5" so BG put 9.5" on the rear. At the NCCC 1983 convention in Indy there were several non-Z51 cars like mine. The cars having different size front and rear wheels raised issue with me running pure stock class rules with NCCC. Guys were swapping wheels around to stay legal.

I would say with some degree of certainty it came that way. I'm not sure how you could prove it.

Bowling Green kept very good records compared to St. Louis, being well into the computer age. I think you can order a build sheet and window sticker from the museum for your car if you don't have one. See the link below.

It might show 9.5" being installed.

i agree mike, it would be next to impossible to prove it. i know its not on my build sheet all it said on my window sticker is 16 inch alum wheels. i did call the original dealer and ask them if they had any information on my Vin number. all they told me was no. they don't keep records that long.

                      Re: wheels 84

I picked up my Gold '84 in May of 1983 with about 1500 miles on. There was an interesting story behind the car; I bought it from local dealer in Mishawaka Indiana. It was sold or traded to them from Detroit dealer who loaned it to Amoco for the commercial below. What the ad didn't say was the timing was advanced to make the car run pretty well but would ping badly on regular unleaded.

I've told this story before here but the wheel problem was actually an advantage for me. The 1983 NCCC rules at the time said all wheels had to be the same width and the width could not exceed 8.5" for the class they called "Pure Stock" otherwise you just ran a "Stock" class. Stock class allowed all sorts of mods however the cars were so new nobody modified anything.

For the ’83 NCCC convention I was inexperienced and I didn't care that much anyway so I loaned my front 8.5" wheels to a guy and he gave me the 9.5" wheels for the week. This put me in stock class which had little or no competition so I did very well with the advanced timing. I won my class in concourse then in and had never run a drag race at a strip before but I clearly had the fastest car from the way it was setup and running premium unleaded but so freaked out and worried about red lighting I had horrible response time and finished second.

Forget the battery. For one thing SERVICE battery labeling was usually different than PRODUCTION line batteries. For another thing, all the batteries configured the same (or close to the same) as your original are "dead" by now. In "human terms" it's like looking for a living person that was alive when Lincoln was president----there aren't any such people, not a single one

I don't think this battery is currently reproduced but it might be in the future so there is hope.

Wheels America (www.wheelsamerica.com) has restored examples of the 1984 wheels in stock, both the 8.5" and 9.5" variety. I have found that this outfit does an outstanding job of repairing and restoring wheels to appear as-new.

                            Jonney,
I found a Jan 1984 built 84 for sale on Cars.com with about 130 miles on it. There are a few shots of the glove box contents and lots of other good images. It's hard to believe these cars are almost 30 years old.

The Gaterbacks changed from 1984 to 1985 up the 84' tires had the letters rescessed, 85 up had letters raised. The example below has the correct recessed type.

                            85 Up

mike, how cool is that. do you still have the car? i have dragged raced allot in my time. i got my nrha lic, to drive pro-comp. i lost my ride around 10 years ago. do to the owner of the car. he got him self in trouble with his wife and killed her. he's still in prison at this day. bummer. the car i drove was a 63 corvette highly modified. it ran on nos and was turbo charged. the fastest i ever been in this car was 6.54 sec at MPH. talk about a rush. i wanted to buy the car and sponsorship however it was sized by the feds. long story. any ways i still hit the track every-once and while on my Harley. it runs around high 11 sec in a i/4 mile not bad for a street bike. its a 2012 Electra glide. other wise a bagger. i had a person call me last night about the wheels he told me he had them in his warehouse so he going today to find them and see if the part numbers are correct for a 84. my vette only has 17,000 + miles on it. its red on red. i hope someday i can get a top flight award .
