Is the only gasket material between the "outer cover w/ flapper"(item #3) and the "outer heater adapter plate"(item #2) on the heater for a '58 the "dum-dum" or 3m strip caulk? The purchased gasket kit has a large gasket, that I assume goes between the "outer heater adapter plate"(item #2) and the "heater core box"(item #1)? Is this correct?

I believe the only thing the judges expect to see between #2 and #3 on the firewall side is dum-dum. I originally had a foam gasket that Dr. Rebuild sells in his heater repair kit between #2 and the fire wall. You could see that foam gasket from the underhood side. I found out from a fellow who got dinged at a regional for having this foam gasket and not dum-dum. So I pulled my heater apart enought to remove the foam gasket and replace with strips of dum-dum. Mine is a 60.

I think you have it installed wrong. I believe the gasket goes on the passenger compartment side of the firewall. Dr. Rebuild also sells a "dum-dum" material, as original, to go on the engine side of the firewall. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe, the problem is I did have the gasket on the passenger side of the firewall. However, the fresh air plenum is smaller than the opening in the firewall, thus you can see the gasket. I have talked to a couple of guys who had their cars judged at the Texas Regional, and the judges there were looking for 'Black" strip caulk to show between the plenum and the firewall areas. The stuff that Dr. Rebuild sells is gray strip caulk, or at least that is what I got in the kit I bought from him.
A direct quote from the Chassis judging sheet from the Texas Regional for 'heater inlet plenum or block off plate', the judge wrote "sh black strip caulk". So, I changed what I had, i.e. the Dr. Rebuild gasket to strip caulk. Attached is a picture from under the hood that shows what I have described. This is not my car, but had the same look where you can see the gasket that is on the inside of the firewall around the edges of the fresh air inlet plenum. My understanding is the judges will deduct for the gasket and expect to see black strip caulk.I guess I will find out at Bowling Green where I plan to have my 1960 judged.
