This has put the project on hold and I don't know what to do next. The bodyshop who did the paint work has given up, and he's got a lot more patience than I have. It's like the rubber is too thick and won't allow the trim to get all the way in position. It does clip on some of the clips, refuses to clip on others, and looks bowed out instead of bedding down on the rubber, especially in the corners. When I last posted this I could not remember the source of the weatherstrips, but at somebody's suggestion I ordered a new set from Long Island. They told me on the phone that they'd never had any reports of problems. When they got here they had the exact same silver paint stick markings on them identifying left from right, so I think they're the same as the new set we cut out. There just aren't any variables in the process tha I can figure. I did 'em the first time, and then a professional glass installer did the newer set, and the result is the same. The clips are the original ones that came in this car from the factory, and so is the trim and the glass. Only the rubber has been changed (twice).

Re: Still struggling to get rear window trim installed on 63 coupe
i'd remove the glass and weatherstrip, then install the stainless trim in the openings to ensure the stainless isn't bent and that the clips are correct(hence grabbing the stainless. once you've determined the stainless will snap into the clips, then re-install the glass weatherstripping and hope all snaps in place. its a PITA but its do-able.good luck, mike- Top

Re: Still struggling to get rear window trim installed on 63 coupe
Mike, thanks for the suggestions. I actually cut the glass out of a brand new set of rubber perviously installed because the windows weren't being cooperative by trying to work them back out and I was afraid of breaking one. I did all the buffing on the trim and believe it to be in perfect shape. I also have 2 more complete sets, although only one other 63 coupe, so substitution or trial wouldn't be an issue, and the clips are the original ones from this car. Comparing my other coupe, the old rubber still in it with the trim removed does not appear nearly as thick ABOVE the glass. I had initially wondered if paint buildup in the area under the glass, that is sandwiched in the lower slot of the weatherstrip could account for the glass and rubber sitting higher, but this wouldn't cause the rubber to appear higher above the glass itself, only for the glass & rubber assembly to be higher, which would create the same problem. We've probably got 10 or 12 hrs in fooling with it now, with no ideas on what to do next other than hunt an additional source on weatherstrip, hoping the next one isn't as fat as these seem to be.- Top

Re: Still struggling to get rear window trim installed on 63 coupe
I'm going to try and remember Monday to measure the thickness above the windows on the new set vs the old originals in the other car. Is Jay Price still around? The last time I talked to him about weatherstrip was also about 25 yrs ago.- Top
