Given the constant snow in the upper midwest, and the blizzard heading for the northeast, I thought I'd post this picture. It was given to me by a member of my congregation. It was his brother's car.

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
Mike, Cool picture. I drove my '60 many miles the first winter I had it (1974) in Iowa. Like Bruce said, no back up vehicle, it was the only car I owned. It provided many unwanted thrills but fortunately I never had an accident. Don H.- Top

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
living in morgantown, w va from 67 thru 78, my daily driver was the 57 250 pg fi that duntov'd in @ 2008. the old girl was a pittsbirgh pa vet before i bought her in 70 for $450. it had +250K miles on it the nite my wife and 3 kids drove it back from pittsburg, lea following me and chrissy ,in the vet, they in our 51 chevy woody wagon.it was, as john degregory would say, was a POS at the time and we barely made it to morgantown that nite. thru a snow storm, torn top and a front wheel bearing screaming a death howl. over the next 8 years, ity was my only transportation to med school, running a L-88, muncie, 456 drivetrain. the frame was rusty when i bbought it, and its frame was dangerously thin whe i parked it in 78. its probably seen more snow than i have. viewed today, you'd never suspect the abuse previous owners and myself have put her thru over the years. today, there is a couple of inches on the ground here in western md. in the am, i might just take her for a spin, for old times sake. mike- Top

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
Winter of '64-'65 I had the '57 for a month or two. Most were driving their cars with studded snow tires in far northern IN. I decided to learn how to leave a stop sign at the top of a hill by gently feathering the clutch, staying out of the second 4bbl, not taking advantage of the 3.70 and not spinning the Atlas Bucron cheaters.I walked the rest of the winter and although my feet got cold my pants were dry.

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
The reason I only have 3 of the original wheels for my '59 is because the rears were swapped with a '55 Chevy that had snow tires (probably recaps).
The '59 was driven in the winter snow from 1959 until it was retired from daily use in 1971.- Top

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
One of the most prominent memories of the early years of owning my '69 was a blizzard on Long Island in 1973. I was working at what was then A&S (now Macy's) on Northern Blvd. in Manhasset. The blizzard closed Northern Blvd. west which was my route back to Bayside. I was in the Corvette and my friend was in front of me in his Chevy. With traffic stopped about half way we pulled into a side street and went into a diner for dinner. When we came out traffic had not moved one inch so we decided to walk. After many stops at bars along the way to "warm up". we made it to my apartment. The next morning my dad drove us both back to get our cars. All I could see of my car was the upper fenders and antenna. I cleared the snow from the exhaust tips and driver's door and started it up, put it in gear and plowed out from the curb. Got all the way home without getting stuck weaving my way between all the cars with spinning wheels and those stuck. I never got stuck in this car in snow.

I also remember driving my 60 FI car as a daily driver in the late 1960's and always put "studded" snow tires on it each winter.- Top

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
Those were the days. I remember a snowy 1963 January in Amherst, Mass. pushing my fraternity brother's white 60 Corvette out of the parking lot. He had snow tires on the rear but we had almost a foot of snow. Probably that 60 is now in somebody's collection and is presented as an Arizona car all of its life.- Top

Re: A 54 in snow, circa 1959
I didn't take any pictures this morning - to depressing.
My driveway looks just like yours. We had somewhere between 24" and 28" here southwest of Boston.
Now its getting very cold. This storm was very similiar to the Blizzard of 78 but fortunately they placed a driving ban yesterday and the snow plows had a chance to clear things.
Hope all works out for you as well.- Top
