    3018571 Radiator application in 68

I am unable to find to a definitive answer, despite a search of the archives. Was the 3018571 radiator used in production on 68 big block Corvettes with 4-speed? If not, what was used?

No, the GM #3018571 was not used for any 1968 Corvette. The GM #3018571 was a copper/brass radiator of 27-1/2" wide core width. It had no integral filler and, thus, required a remote supply tank. The 3018571 had no provisions for automatic transmission oil cooler. The 3018571 was used in PRODUCTION for most 1969-72 Corvettes with big block and 4 speed transmission. It was once available in SERVICE but was discontinued in March, 1970 and replaced by the GM #3019190 which is the same radiator but WITH oil cooler provisions (unused for manual transmission applications).

The radiator used in PRODUCTION for 1968 big blocks with 4 speed transmission was GM #3008567. This radiator has a 22-1/2" width core, an integral filler on the right side tank, and no provisions for a transmission oil cooler. It was discontinued from SERVICE in December, 1971 and replaced by GM #3008566, an identical radiator but WITH oil cooler provisions.

By the way, both the 3019190 (69+) and 3008566 (66-68) are long-since GM discontinued.

I will add to what Joe said by saying, the 68 is a strange character, and that includes radiators. I do not know which aluminum radiator it was, but some earlier 68s with BB and no options used the Aluminum radiator with the metal shrouds.

Thank you, Wayne. Now that you mention it, I have a vague recollection of hearing something like this before. I will see what I can find on this point.

There is no doubt that the early 68's are out of keeping with expectation. To me, it's a never-ending source of fascination.

            Wayne-----

I wonder if a unique metal shroud was used? The circular one used for small blocks would be about 2-3" too deep for use with a big block. If the small block shroud was used, the fan would be entirely within the shroud.

              Joe,

I dont really know, but I have seen several. I used to work on one regularly, about serial number 3K, 390 4spd. The owner always complained about overheating. Sometime later we added aftermarket AC and changed it out to the larger copper brass radiator and the fiberglass shroud.
