    Bell housing

    Are the bell housings painted engine color or are they natural in color from the factory? Thank you

    Painted with the engine, at least up thru the early 70's

      They're usually partially painted. Some big blocks may have been completely painted but most small blocks were only partially painted, approximately half way back from the engine.

        I think your big block statement may need to be stronger. This picture is not great, but it shows the big block bell housings completely painted engine orange, except for the vertical surface in the back that mates with the transmission. Of course, it is possible that the process changed at some point.

          That paint process was done manually, at 300 engines per hour (Tonawanda shown below), and was subject to considerable variation depending on how motivated the sprayers felt at the moment.
