Re: 1954 speedo cabe lubrication?
AC makes a special grease for this application. It is called General Purpose Lubricant #ST-800 but often just called cablelube. It comes in a tube and would be available from your Chevy dealer.
On the tube is says:
"Speedometer cables require a special lubricant, one that will withstand sub-zero and tropical temperatures and will resist rust and corrosion. ST-800 lubricant is especially suitable for temperatures ranging from -50 F to 210F."
In my experience a regular grease would be too stiff in cold weather and might run out in hot weather. I once used a graphite grease on the cable for my FI high pressure fuel pump and it turned pretty sticky in a few years.Last edited by Troy P.; February 5, 2013, 01:30 PM.- Top

Re: 1954 speedo cabe lubrication?
I just ran into the directions from AC for lubricating the speedo cables using the ST-800 lubricant I discussed above. Here you go:
"Only use AC type ST-800 lubricant. Other lubricants will work up the cable, into the speedometer head and make it inoperative.
1. The cable should be lubricated ONLY along the lower 2/3 of its length. Place one inch of lubricant in the palm of your hand. (It comes in a squirt tube.)
2. Feed the cable into the casing through the lubricant in your hand until the lower 2/3 of the cable is lubricated.
Note: The cable operation will lubricate the upper 1/3 of the cable. Excessive lubrication forces grease into the speedometer head and stops operation of the speed cup."- Top
