    Early 66 Valve Covers

    Gentlemen,

    I have a 327 300 HP 1966 with a production date of 27 Oct 1965 -- VIN 04067.

M.F. Dobbins "Fact Book" page 194, indicates that early 66s displayed two decals per valve cover like the 1965s. The two 65 decals were as follows; ---Chevrolet 327 Turbo-Fire--- and ---300 Horsepower---. The follow-on single 66 application read ---327 Turbo-Fire 300 Horsepower---.

Question is, what decals should be shown on a 66 with the above date?

When I purchased the car, it had aluminum valve covers. Someone wanted to spiff it up a bit.

    Thanks,

    Ken

    Bill,

With the production date being Oct 27 '65 would definitely qualify for early production. Not sure if you'll have your car judged however the NCRS judging manual may offer clarity as to which decal should be used....or considered correct. If it doesn't make any difference to you use the early decal.

Thanks Mike for the reply. Yes, the 1966 Judging Guide says VERY EARLY 66s had two decals per cover. Now, I'm wondering what is considered "very early."

I do not believe "very early production" is defined so it would be the opinion of the person doing the judging, unless you could provide some type of acceptable proof.

Echoing what Phil had to allow reflects on my early '66. Very early '66's carried over several nuances from '65 as we've read. One was shiny wiper arms and inserts however no timeline was given for this change. My car's build was late Sept, early Oct of '65, most likely qualifying for 'very early'. So what does a person do?? As long as the judging reflects this possibility you can use the early scenario...two decals......however with your car's build being late Oct'65 most likely would not qualify as 'very early'. When a car is being judged it's always open to their interpretation.

            Thanks Guys,

It appears that we're all at the same point in refining what is real. Just thought there might be someone who had gone down this road before and could provide some factual references.

            Thanks again,

            Ken
